Sizing Information

These jackets are sold in US based “alpha” sizes. This particular style is part of Alpinestar’s Urban collection and it runs just a bit smaller than their other jackets… I’d say about 1/2 or even one full size smaller. If you have a pretty trim build and prefer a trim fit, you’ll likely find a fit in the size you normally wear in men’s clothing. If you have a more stout build, you’ll probably wind up in a jacket that is one size larger than you usually wear. We measured each size in this jacket style and developed the size chart below. Just measure both your chest and your belly and then choose a jacket size that will accommodate both.

Jacket Size Max Chest Max Belly
Small 37.5 35.5
Medium 40 38
Large 42 40
XL 44.5 42.5
XXL 47 45
XXXL 49 47
XXXXL 51.5 49.5

About sizing when accessory armor is used: I’d recommend you add 1” to your chest and belly measurements if you plan on adding the chest pads and the KR-1i/CELLi back pad, which will be most peoples upgrade choice. If you want to add the KR-2i back pad, add 2” to both your chest and belly measurements before selecting from the chart.

Our Two Cents

The Alpinestars Ray v2 jacket is a great choice for street and/or urban riders who want a simply styled, non-racy looking jacket for everyday use. This jacket will look great on or off the bike. It has surprising protection capabilities too.

The shell of the Ray is a textile material. Alpinestars says it is “waxed”. I don’t really feel anything waxy, but they say it is treated to be water resistant, which it feels like it will be. It isn’t a waterproof style, so consider this one to be good for an occasional shower for shorter durations. The fabric strikes me as being sturdy and similar in abrasion resistance to a typical textile jacket although the “feel” of the material is more like cotton. The tag says the shell is 100% polyester, so even though it feels like cotton, it will hold up much better than a plain cotton jacket.

The overall setup is simple… just a short waist zip front style with two hand warmer pockets outside, three patch pockets inside and one zip-close breast pocket (waterproof) inside. The two pockets on the chest are fakes… just for style I guess. The quilting on the bicep area adds a bit of retro style. I find the sleeve lengths to be generous, so you’ll have plenty of length reaching forward. On the inside in back, there are a couple of snap loops to connect the tail of the jacket to your belt to help hold down the back at higher speeds.

The Ray comes with the same armor upgrade options as their other textile and mesh jackets. Firstly, you get CE-certified level 1 BioLite shoulders and elbow protectors which are a lighter/thinner molded armor piece which is just perfect for a casual style like this. This jacket also includes chest and back protection capability. There are two chest pad compartments in front and the traditional back pad compartment. You can add chest and back protectors (see the links below). I’d recommend the KR-CELLi back pad or the Nucleon KR-1i for this jacket. The 2i (level 2) will also fit, but I personally think it will be overkill for this jacket. We’ve got good descriptions of all, so just click through the links to consider those options.

Overall, I like this style for its simple styling that disguises very good protection capabilities. Anybody could be comfortable wearing this style either on or off the bike. :: Paul, 10-01-18
