Our Two Cents

The Sena SMH5-FM features a built-in FM radio tuner with station scan and save function. Sena makes great products and this one is no exception but I will always down play the “FM radio” feature on any communication system/intercom. I have not been able to test the FM radio function of this unit but it would be safe to assume that reception could be worse than a car stereo and would definitely be affected by the users location and riding terrain.

FM radio feature aside, the SMH5-FM is an excellent value, here’s why. Even though it is not listed in the product features of our website or Sena’s website, the SMH5-FM has the same Bluetooth 3.0 version as the SMH10 that allows 4 separate riders to be paired together and communicate in conference mode! (Conference phone call with intercom participant is not available with the SMH5-FM)

So what’s different about the SMH5-FM compared to the SMH10? The range of the SMH5-FM is 700 meters or 760 yards vs. 900 meters or 980 yards on the SMH10. There is no auxiliary “in” port on the SMH5-FM so audio must be streamed to the unit using a Bluetooth enabled audio device. Lastly, up to 7 hours talk time, 6 days stand-by time with the SMH5-FM vs. up to 12 hours talk time with 10 days stand-by time with the SMH10.

If you don’t mind sacrificing some range, talk time and stand-by time, the SMH5-FM offers the best bang for your buck!

Pair 4 separate riders together using the “daisy chain” method (the instructions/user guider will go over this) rider 1 pairs to rider 2 and then rider 2 pairs to rider 3, etc… If rider 1 gets further than 900 meters from rider 2, the connection is lost. If rider 2 gets further than 900 meters from rider 3, the connection is lost and so on. The good thing is the SMH10 is set up to automatically reconnect when pairing is lost. Example, when you have 4 riders in conference mode (using the “daisy chain” pairing method) and rider 4 loses connection from rider 3, rider 1, 2 and 3 are still in conference mode. When rider 4 gets back in range, his SMH5-FM will automatically pair back with rider 3 and in turn, join back into the conference conversation with the other 3 riders.

I've never had helmet communicators before and I'm not sure how I lived without them. It's so nice to be able to talk to my pillion instead of using hand gestures to determine if she's hungry, thirsty, gassy or whatever. I also enjoy listening t... (Read more...)
