Sizing Information

These pants are sold in US ladies dress sizes. In years past, FirstGear women’s pants were pretty predictable for size. This year though the pants are running larger than expected. We checked both the Contour Air and Sirocco Mesh Overpants and both of which are 2019 introductions, each pant measured out the same.

Admittedly, I only had a size 12 for evaluation. The waist on the size 12 measured out at about 35” and 33” in the inseam which means the pants measure about one or two sizes larger than FirstGear’s chart indicates (see FirstGear’s chart below).

The waist on these pants is adjustable with the side Velcro straps so the they’ll adjust down by at least a couple inches. And given that motorcycle pants are cut pretty high on the waist, my best advice at present would be to make a selection from the chart and then buy one size smaller. Even at one size smaller they should allow plenty of room to have other clothing on underneath.

In our photo gallery, we are showing the size 12 on our Fit Check Mannequin Shirley who is a standard size 12 form with a 32” waist. We put the pants over the jeans she normally wears.

Pant Size Waist Hip Inseam
6 28.5” 37.5” 28.5”
8 29.5” 38.5” 29.5”
10 30.5” 39.5” 30.5”
12 32” 40.5” 31.5”
14 32.5” 42” 32.5”
16 35” 43.5” 33.5”
18 39” 45” 33.5”

Our Two Cents

FirstGear’s new Contour Air pants for 2019 are a great all-around hot weather style pant that offers protection in a package that will be comfortable in hot weather. Armor is included. These pants are the “sister” to the 2019 men’s Rush Air Pants.

Note: The Contour Air is designed primarily to be worn over undergarments. If you were looking for a summer pant to wear over street clothes, take a look at the similarly useful Sirocco Air Overpants (take the link below).

These are very functional pants for everyday for commuting or for touring. A couple nice features as compared to past FirstGear styles are: the waist band is nice and wide with effective Velcro adjusters on each side of the waist band; and the closure at the waist is a snap/hook combination that won’t pop open under pressure (a frequent gripe of mine with past FG designs).

Almost the entire pant is a flow through mesh material so these pants will be just the ticket for summer use. But the pants also have a removable waterproof liner. You can use the liner in wet weather and stay dry. But more importantly the liner can be used as a wind block which will extend the usable temp range of the pants by a lot. Use the liner in spring and fall with some of your own undergarments for insulation. You’ll still have the abrasion protection from the mesh/textile shell and also in the impact protection from the armor units.

Speaking of armor, there are knee and hip inserts included. The armor is Knox brand which is a well respected brand. It’s a garden variety soft rubber energy absorbing kind which is rated CE 1. It is very flexible and should be comfortable to wear. Over the knees, the pants are well reinforced with a double layer of the textile fabric too. The seat gets a double layer as well.

Other nice features here: Short rear connection zipper you can use to connect to a FirstGear jacket OR you can ask your tailor to mount the mating zipper half (included with the pants) into your existing or future jacket to make the connection; a short rear zip at the end of the ankle to help with pulling pants on; stretch material is supplied above the knee, crotch and below the waist in back to give some freedom of movement. :: Paul, 07-30-19

FirstGear says: The Contour Air Pant gives a performance fit tailored for women. The chassis’ poly mesh main construction with knee and saddle abrasion-resistant impact panels and CE-approved Level 1 Knox™ Micro-Lock™ armor at the knees and hips provides exceptional protection. Includes a breathable, waterproof, removable liner with elasticized cuffs for rainy weather. Waist side adjusters and easy access rear leg zippers (on both the outer shell and removable liner) provide a comfortable fit.
