Our Two Cents
Tour Master has introduced three new boot models for 2017… the Epic Air Touring, the Epic Touring and the Trinity Touring for Women. The key thing about all three of these models is the OutDry waterproof lining construction, so I’ll cover all three boots in this review.
Over the years, we’ve offered hundreds of waterproof boots, and they fall into one of two camps…. the Gore-Tex liner and the “generic” waterproof liner. And comparing apples to apples with regard to the boot, the Gore-Tex version is about $50 to $75 more. The Gore-Tex brand is widely regarded as the best waterproof technology around because of its ability to keep water out but also to allow moisture to escape.
Now comes the OutDry technology. OutDry is the brand of waterproofing and it is a subsidiary of Columbia Sportswear. When I search on the web for OutDry, I see LOTS of products available in all sorts of sporting goods categories, so obviously the product has some chops.
What’s different here is that the OutDry liner is bonded directly to the boot’s upper material rather than being installed as a “bootie” between the boot’s exterior shell and the interior lining. By bonding it,water does not pass through the outer shell and lessens the chances of leaks and waterlogging of the boot assembly. Here’s a detailed explanation.
The men’s Epic and women’s Trinity are the models that are made most traditionally with a largely solid upper material. The Epic Air is part solid upper mixed with breathable mesh material panels. The Epic Air will be the most comfortable in hot weather, and the others for all but hot weather. Keep in mind that since the waterproof liner is bonded behind the shell, it does keep the Epic air from being a fully free flowing boot, so think of the Epic Air as being “maginally” cooler than the Epic/Trinity styles.
I found the boots to feel good and have a wide sturdy sole. The interior is lined with a breathable, durable material backed by a thin foam layer… much like all the other sport touring boots we sell. The toe and heel are reinforced and there are built in ankle protectors on either side of the ankle bone. Those are well positioned and work well with the zipper. Also, there is a reinforcement in the shin area as well. All this combines to feel pretty darn sturdy and compares well with other higher end boots we carry in the same price range.
One aspect of the design of this boot is the zipper. It goes all the way up the neck of the boot and in doing so, does not allow for any adjustment of the throat size with the Velcro closure. They work fine for me and I have average size calves, but those with larger than average legs might have trouble with this boot in that regard. We’ve included some phtotos in our gallery to help you get a feel for the diameter of the throat and the height of the shaft. You can measure yourself to help know if this will be a problem for you.
Overall, I’d say Tour Master has upped their game with this trio of styles this year. I’m hopeful the OutDry technology proves to be something new and valuable in the motorcycle boot market. It will take time and lots of miles by lots of folks to know. :: Paul, 05-11-17
