Sizing Information

You’ll have to be careful in choosing a size in this jacket. We used Huey and Dewey, our 42 and 46 size Fit Test mannequins to check out sizing. We were just barely able to get the jackets on and zip them. Now granted, a sport/race jacket like this is supposed to fit darn near skin tight, but even still, it is our opinion that you’d have to pick a size one size larger than normal for a reasonably comfortable fit. I confirmed this with a tape on the two test jackets. I measure a 44 chest and 38 waist/belly on the size 46 jacket and a 40 chest and a 34 waist/belly on the size 42 jacket. If you compare my chest measurements to the AGV chart below, they are just about one size smaller than published.

AGV includes a “waist” size in their chart. I’ve always thought a “max belly” indication is more appropriate since the bottom part of a sport jacket fits more around your lower belly rather than your waist where your jeans ride. Anyway, the max belly for this sport cut jacket is about 6” less than the measured chest (as in my examples above).

AGV’s Chart:

Size Chest (inches) Waist (inches) Sleeve (inches)
40 40 – 41 30 – 32 24.5
42 42 – 43 32 – 34 25
44 44 – 45 34 – 36 25.5
46 45 – 47 36 – 38.5 25.5
48 47 – 48.5 38.5 – 41 26
50 49 – 50 40 – 43 26.5
52 50 – 52 42 – 45 26.5

Our Two Cents

AGV’s Photon Perforated leather jacket is built very much like the upper half of a race suit. The overall cut is VERY sporty… pre-curved for the riding position and very trim (see comments above). Those who ride a sport bike will like the posture that is comfortable with the jacket zipped up, but those in more upright riding positions probably won’t. Overall, my thoughts on the jacket are very much like my thoughts on the Valencia 1pc Suit (which was introduced at about the same time as the Photon). It is a jacket with a nice shell, but with only average armor protectors and overall quality. I know that sounds a bit negative, but if you consider the price range, it really isn’t negative at all. This jacket has a feature list that compares with jackets that are easily twice its price. And for those that want the sport fit, the racy looks and the unmatched protection that only thick cowhide can provide, and can tolerate a bit less build quality, then this will be a very good pick. Actually this jacket does have some surprising good points… the overall tailoring of the shell and liner is very good. The removable vest though is, errr, well, kinda crappy. For cooler weather, you can probably do better for warmth by layering with something from your own closet. I like the sleeve ends… the neoprene is very comfy! I wish they’d have done this with the Valencia suit! You can get a pair of leather pants and zip them to this jacket to form a pretty competent 2pc suit too. The exterior styling is sharp. Take the “View Larger Images” link above to see a close-up shot of the external shoulder armor (mostly cosmetic but cool nonetheless). And the jacket has some good reflectives that we show with our “night shot”. I’d have called them out on the crappy thin back protector, but really, you can’t fit a whole lot more under the shell with the speed hump in back, so the combination of the two seems pretty good. One advantage you’d have with this jacket and a pair of leather pants rather than a suit is that you’d get some pockets. There are a couple in front (although they are positioned laughably high up), and there are a couple more inside. In summary, I’d give this jacket the thumbs up for those looking for a full-on race style that can’t plop down five bills for one of the high-end brands. :: Paul, 05-07-12

I bought the AGV Photon and Willow pants and like them both. Of course Motorcycle Gear did a great job with descriptions and sizing recommendations as usual. This should be mentioned in the product details. (Read more...)
