Sizing Information

The pants are sold in ordinary US Alpha sizes and Alpinestars offers a chart to estimate the waist size for each alpha size. The conversion estimates are about what you’d expect for each US alpha size but the actual pants are a bit smaller than what Alpinestars estimates. In our Fit Check with Huey and Dewey, we had to do our feature photos with the XL pants on Huey (who would usually wear a Medium) because the Medium pants wouldn’t fit over his bum!

To help you get the right size, we’ve developed a chart which shows Alpinestars “official” estimate of size and what size we observed. Please note that we are listing a waist size range for each pant. That is because the pants have adjustment tabs on the waist that allow you to snug them down if needed.

Alpha Size Alpinestars Waist
Size Estimate
Our Waist
Size Estimate
Small 31 to 32.5 28-31
Medium 33.5 to 35 31-33
Large 36 to 37.5 33-34.5
XL 38 to 39.5 34-36
XXL 40.5 to 42 36-38
XXXL 43 to 44.5 38-40

These pants are available in “regular” and “short” inseam lengths. We used the “regular” inseam lengths to check fit and to take feature pictures. The size Med had a 35” inseam and the XL had a 36” inseam by my tape. Hmmmm….what to make of this! Well, our Alpinestars rep got in touch with Italy and they offered the following inseam length estimate. It seems the “short” selections are more like a regular inseam and the “regular” selections are more like a tall inseam. The vertically challenged won’t find a fit here I’m afraid.

Pant Size Regular Inseam Short Inseam
Small 34” 32”
Medium 35” 33”
Large 35” 33”
XL 36” 34”
XXL 36” 34”
XXXL 36.5” 34.5”
XXXXL 36.5” 34.5”

Our Two Cents

The Valparaiso pants are compatible with the matching Valparaiso jacket in both style and function. I said a lot of good things about the colors, style and tailoring of the jacket and those comments apply to the pants as well (take the link below to see that discussion). These pants are made to be worn over undewear and not as an overpant. There isn’t a reason you couldn’t wear them over street clothes, but they are tailored a bit more closely to the body and they lack the customary long side zipper to allow easy “on and off” you see with the usual “overpant”. The pants have the customary outer nylon shell and then the shell is backed by a fixed Drystar waterproof, breathable liner. The liner will be the thing that keeps the water out and since it is a fixed design, it should do a very good job of that. As far as I can tell, there aren’t any (or at least many) places where water could pass that liner (such as zippers), so I’d have pretty high confidence in the waterproof claim of these pants. As for the usable comfortable temperature range, I’d say cold to mild… maybe even a bit warm, but I wouldn’t think these would be great for hot weather. For the cold weather, the pants have the solid shell, windproof membrane and then a removable full leg length thermal liner. Altogether, that is a LOT of cold weather functionality! So for warmer temps, you can remove the thermal liner (but the fixed waterproof liner stays), and you can open the two thigh vents. The factory bullets mention a rear exhaust vent, but I don’t see one on the production pant models we used. Anyway, the venting is skimpy and the fixed liner will prevent any direct air flow through the pant to your skin, and therefore, these won’t be great in the summer. Other things I like are the waist adjustments, the suspenders, and nighttime reflectivity. I’m a fan of pant suspenders, and for long rides, the suspenders allow you to wear the pants not so tight through the waist and that makes for a more comfortable long ride sitting in the saddle. The side waist adjusters I mentioned will help you fine tune the fit in the waistband to account for suspender use or not (they are removable BTW), and what sort of clothes you are wearing under the pants. And the reflectivity is good also…we took some night shots and included them in our photo gallery for you. Overall, these are very nice pants and would complete a very high-end outfit with the matching jacket, or for that matter could be paired with any textile riding jacket. :: Paul, 01-03-14
