Sizing Information

We measured a sampling of these jeans of different waist sizes and lengths and find they are much like other jeans you’d buy these days. They are just a bit “vainity” sized in the waist and pretty true in the length. Across the size run, the actual measured waist was about 2” larger than the stated waist size (typical vanity sizing). And of course these are denim and although pre-washed, may shrink just a tad too. The jeans have pockets in the hips for the addition of the Tryonic Seesoft hip protectors (see link below). These add a bit of bulk to the hip area but no so much that you have to oversize the pants in order to use them. So my overall advice would be to buy the waist size you normally wear in jeans; you’ll likely find a fit. If you aren’t sure whether your jeans are vanity sized like I’m describing, then either measure your waist where your normal jeans ride or measure your favorite pair of jeans to verify. You’ll probably find that you measure out a bit bigger than your normal jeans size and also the waist of your favorite jeans measures out an inch or two bigger than their stated size. If so, you will be on track following my advice.

The inseam lengths measured out about right as compared to the stated size, BUT there are a couple considerations here… first, these jeans come standard with knee armor and the knees are reinforced with a thick layer of an abrasion resistant material. Those two features add a bit of thickness and when you sit, that means the inseam gets a bit shorter than you might expect. Another issue is that these jeans taper significantly from knee to ankle… sort of a slim cut and when I’ve seen the guys at REV’IT wear these, they are in the habit of rolling up the ends a bit. Also, there is a reflective strip on the outside seam at the bottom that only shows when the ends are rolled. So considering the tapered end, the knee armor issue, the reflectivity and all, I’d recommend you buy one size longer than you normally wear. If between sizes, choose the longer.

Our Two Cents

So what makes a jean worth about twice as much as another? Well, it’s a combination of things… some styling related and some functional. I’ve often been wary of more expensive European style jeans because the fit of the jeans is sometimes problematic… they can be super skinny and run small, but with these new jeans, I think they’ve nailed the fit issue, and given the other functional and styling advantages, I decided people would enjoy these jeans very much… even considering the price.

Note: REV’IT! introduced two styles, the Austin and Seattle, at the same time. Only difference is the “wash”... the Austin is a bit lighter, and the Seattle is darker. Visit the photo gallery on each page to see actual photos to get the idea. Functionally and fit-wise, the jeans are the same, so this review applies to both.

I’m not normally a wearer of skinny leg jeans, but after trying these on, I’ve decided I like them for the bike. The tapered fit holds the low profile knee armor in place very well and I think would increase the chances of it being in the right place at the wrong time. And the trimmer cuff is nice too… it won’t flap or catch unnecessary wind. In the close-up photo, you’ll see me in a pair of 36s with the armor installed in both the hips and knees and really, you can’t even see it. And although I can feel the more substantial hips, I really couldn’t feel the knee armor much. It is soft and super pliable. And even this old guy looks pretty good if I do say so myself!

The front and back pockets are deep and functional, and the belt loops are plenty wide and there are plenty of them. The overall cut includes a bit of a dip in the waist in the front while the back is higher, which works well on a bike to prevent the dreaded plumber’s butt. These jeans definitely aren’t the annoying kind that I call “noassitol” jeans where every time you bend over, they pull down. They are cut for riding and they seem to work well in that regard.

See my comments in the sizing info about inseam selection. I normally wear 32’s in Levis and the ones for the photo are 34s and they work fine either left un-rolled or even rolled up.

Like other riding jeans, these are reinforced in the seat and knees (behind the denim), and these have a very comprehensive armor package… knee armor is provided as standard, and hips are optional. And it all seems to work well!

Overall, I’m very pleased with these jeans… how they look, fit and feel. I think they are worth it. :: Paul, 02-16-16

These are really well made riding jeans, on the slim side and as noted, vanity sized at the waist. I'm usually a 32 and needed to get the 30. My main reason for this post however is to say a big thank you to Aaron and motorcyclegear.com. I had s... (Read more...)

The REV'IT Austin Jeans seems to check all the right boxes for riding jeans. My normal jeans size are Levi's 505 @ 30"W x 30"L; I wanted to get a good pair of riding jeans for the more casual, short rides. My dad bought a pair earlier and was very... (Read more...)
