Our Two Cents

Icon has finally added a drop down visor, they are calling it a “Drop Shield”. The Alliance GT helmet is the first street helmet we have seen from Icon to include a drop down visor. And in true Icon style they offer the drop shield in several tint and color options. Swapping out the shield is pretty straightforward, so it should not be a problem to change it out if it ever gets scratched or if the rider wants to change the tint. I really like how they brought in a fresh perspective to the drop down visor world. The Alliance GT is a definite upgrade to their older Alliance helmet. The GT still carries their all world standard we have come to expect from Icon. The shell of the helmet is a long oval shape so it isn’t going to work for someone with a round head. The shell has 3 vents on the chin bar and two vents on the top of the helmet. On the inside of the chin bar there are two dials to adjust the airflow to the rider’s face. You can really fine tune the amount of airflow you are getting which is a cool feature (no pun intended). The best part about this is you can keep air flowing up the visor to keep it from fogging up on you, without having cold air blasting you in the face. The back of the helmet features 6 exhaust vents. This really increases the amount of air flow though the helmet so you do get plenty of ventilation. The internal padding is made from Icon’s HydraDry moisture wicking material. All the padding can be removed and washed when it starts to get soiled. The Alliance GT does not have any recessed areas dedicated for speakers, however the design of the cheek pad allows for some extra room where a speaker could be installed. The cheek pads are pretty thick around the bottom so pulling the helmet on can be tricky for some. You do not want to pull it straight down from the top of your head. Instead you want to start at the back of your head and roll the helmet forward and down. Trust me your ears will thank you. Once the helmet is on you should have plenty of room. If you are familiar with the Icon fit then there should not be any surprises here. The cheek pad design along with the thick padded neck roll creates a great seal around the base of your head and jaw line. keeping the helmet stable and secure on your head. It also helps block out that wind and road noise we all love so much. -Aaron 02/22/2016
