Our Two Cents

The SMX Plus racing boot gets an ever-so-subtle design upgrade for 2017. The boots look nearly identical to the previous version, and I had to inquire with Alpinestars as to the difference. The answer? ...new graphics for 2017, the Multi Link system is now lower profile, and they have a smoother contact with the bike.

I tried on my size in this boot and just like with the previous model, I really like the fit. This boot is one of the few race boots with the internal laces and adjustable calf area. I have a 16” calf and the top opens up wide enough to accommodate me and has about 1 more inch left as well, which is quite a lot for a race boot like this. The inside is lined with a breathable liner with just a slight bit of padding behind it.

With the side zipper, internal laces and upper ratchet, you’d think they’d be a pain to put on and take off, but it’s quite the opposite. The speed laces work very well and quickly as does the top ratchet. And one other thing that helps with fit and comfort… the side zipper on the boot is attached to a narrow panel of stretch material which helps when pulling up the zipper. It makes the boot snug, but a bit flexible so you don’t have to sort of tease the zipper sides together with your hands as you try to zip them up (as you sometimes do with rigidly affixed zippers).

The boots of course have full-on racing features, but are comfortable and functional so they could be used for sport/street riding as well. There is a substantial amount of protection on either side of the ankle and heel and also in the shin area. The “Multi Link” control is a series of external plastic pieces that slide and pivot to allow movement in some directions (for shifting, walking, etc), but restrict movement in unfavorable directions (those that cause injury). Most race boots today have similar systems. One observation about this armor system…. they do squeak a bit when you walk as the plastic flexes… this is normal and nearly every boot like this makes those noises, so don’t be concerned.

I really like the rounded shape of the heel assembly. The idea of a design like this is to promote a sliding motion during a fall. Boots that have a more traditional heel shape are more likely to hang up on something (on the ground) while sliding along and wrench the ankle. Makes perfect sense to me.

Overall, a really nice race boot with nearly every feature you could ask for… and excellent fit adjustment capabilities. :: Paul, 08-30-16

Vented and non-vented: You’ll notice in the drop down menu that there are vented and non-vented choices. The vented boots use perforated upper materials to allow for more air flow through the boot. Those in warmer climates will like that! We’ve taken some good close-up pictures so take a look by clicking the “View Larger Images” link above.
