Sizing Information

I measured a sampling of these pants and found the waist sizes to measure out nearly exactly as stated, so the fit is true. My best advice would be to measure your waist (just under your belly button) and choose a size based on the measurement. The pants adjust down just a bit with the ratchet on the front and the two Velcro straps on the sides of the waistband (effectively up to about 3” total) so you will be able to snug the waist to your liking. They don’t adjust bigger than the stated size however.

There are a couple reasons I recommend measuring yourself before ordering. First, a lot of jeans/pants are “vanity sized” and measure out larger than the stated size (to make you feel better about the size that fits you). The second reason is that motorcycle protective pants like this ride higher on the waist than typical jeans, and if you are a bit bigger up higher on your waist, but order sizing based upon a jean size or measurement lower on your hip, the size you choose will likely be too small.

Below is the chart Icon provides for the pant’s inseam measurement. I checked with a tape and the chart is accurate.

Our Two Cents

The Hypersport pants are a very nice leather street pant. I say “street pant” because the overall cut is like a relaxed jean or pair of regular cut Dockers (of course much heavier duty though). Leather race pants are typically a skintight fit and taper at the ankle to tuck into boots, but these pants are made to be a super-heavy duty upgrade from jeans for riding on the street. And I say “super heavy duty” because these pants are far and away more protective than any textile pant or reinforced jean we sell.

The body of the pant is a complex combination of heavy leather and about four different textile materials. Just take the link above to see our close-up pictures and you’ll be able to see the various materials. The material in the crotch area and on the backs of the legs/calves is thinner and stretchy so the pants will be comfortable when sitting on a bike. The material used around the knees and below the shins is more heavy duty to resist abrasion damage. The whole package is VERY secure feeling and the pants are quite heavy. Speaking of heavy… the pants include a zipper connection to Icon Hypersport jackets that will help hold them up. If you want to buy the pants for use with any other jacket, the pants are supplied with the mating half of that connection zipper to make the adaptation easy for a tailor.

The pants are black leather, and of course they’ll be hot if you wear them in hot weather, but they do have some venting. There are some areas that are perforated (see the video or close up pics), and there are a couple panels of “mesh” material on the thigh, so I think they’ll flow decent air. I’d think you’ll be comfortable anywhere from warm to cool weather with just the pants. Layering underneath will work in cold weather.

The impact protection at the knee is very robust… really on par with a lot of race suits I see. The pants have molded rubber armor where the knee bends which is built into the pant shell, and then on the inside there is the D3O armor. The knee armor pieces are put into a nifty pocket sewn into the interior lining of the pant. The armor pocket is sort of a “three position” affair to give you just a bit of adjustment as to where exactly the armor will hit on your knee when sitting. Very nice! The pant legs are boot cut, and on each leg there is a zipper (about 10” long). While this zipper is not long like you see on overpants, I think it would come in handy should you choose to wear these pants over shorts or light clothing. If you decide to do that, I think they’d handle it given the relaxed fit and the fact that the waist band would ride slightly above the waist of any jeans or pants underneath. Being able to use the pants as overpants would greatly increase their usefulness for most people.

Even with the heavy leather and very substantial knee armor arrangement, I found the fit to be comfortable and reasonable for everyday use. The practical fit, the high degree of protection and the overall styling are my “picks” for this new style pant from Icon. I like them. :: Paul, 08-28-14
