Sizing Information

The 2019 Rush and Rush Air jackets are sized for the American market which is more full in the chest and shoulders than some European designs. We tried a size Medium jacket on Huey and an XL on Dewey (our Fit Check mannequins) and they fit just fine. You can see some shots of how they look by clicking the “View Larger Images” link above. Most people will find a fit by ordering the size they usually wear in men’s clothing. If you are sometimes between sizes, I’d advise choosing the smaller.

FirstGear publishes a chart which summarizes the max chest and max waist/belly for each size and we’ve included that below. I found this jacket to match up to the chart pretty well. I think the max belly figures below are a touch smaller than the actual jackets measaures, so I’d say the max belly for any given size is about 4” less than the max chest. For example, in a size Large, the max chest is 44” and the max belly is about 40”.

These jackets have Velcro straps at the waist to help customize the fit for those with a trim waist. They also have adjusters on each arm to take up some of the extra material in the bicep area.

Overall, I found the fit of the Rush and Rush Air jackets to quite generous in sleeve and body length. Tall sizes are available too which adds about 2” to the sleeve and body length. If you only sometimes in need of a tall in men’s clothing, I’d advise you to try the standard jacket first because of the already-generous length.

Size Small Medium Large XL 2XL 3XL
Max Chest 34-36 38-40 42-44 46-48 50-52 54-56
Max Waist/Belly 28-30 32-34 36-38 40-42 44-46 48-50

Our Two Cents

FirstGear is now offering the Rush jacket and Rush Air jackets for 2019. The Rush is a solid textile model with a waterproof liner for cold to mild temps and/or wet weather and the Rush Air is a full mesh jacket with a removable rain liner for hot weather use.

The two jackets are a similar cut and style, so the main differentiation will be your expected climate conditions on the bike. Features that they share is Knox CE 1 armor inserts for the shoulders and elbows. The jackets are set up also for the addition of a back protector. We recommend the D3O CE Approved Back Pad Small and Medium jackets should opt for the Women’s back protector and Large+ for the regular Men’s size for this jacket.

Interested in pants? FirstGear has three new pants in their lineup for 2019 that would be great. the Rush Air Pants are the perfect match for the Rush Air jacket and the Jaunt Overpants would be a good companion for the Rush. I’ve linked to pants at the bottom of this page so you can have a look.

A couple of features that are nice, and that are common to both styles: 1) soft padded ribbing around the collar edge and the sleeve ends to make those comfortable against your skin; 2) LARGE reflective strips for nighttime visibility; 3) jacket to pant zippers in each style with mating halves of the zippers… mate to the FG pants I mention above. or you can use the mating zipper to adapt pants you already own 4) comfortable fit in either version for everyday street riding, commuting, or touring.

The mostly-mesh Rush Air jacket is sold on this page. For the solid textile Rush, take the link below. The Rush Air jacket is made mostly of flow through mesh material so air will constantly flow right through. You’ll want a jacket like this for use in warmer climates… even the hottest weather. This jacket comes with a removable waterproof liner you can use in wet weather. but it also can have a dual purpose. You can wear the liner on cooler mornings/days to make the jacket work for you in less-than-hot conditions too. And if you used your own heavier shirt underneath, you could stretch the temp range even further.

In the back of this jacket are two access zippers to a LARGE rear compartment for stowing the rain liner when not in use. There is also a good selection of pockets on the jacket.

I really like the new Rush jackets. Those with a sturdy frame will like the sizing… even big and tall riders. For the feature list, it’s a reasonably priced jacket with good quality. :: Paul, 04-25-19

Note: FirstGear’s literature mentions a couple of features that are not present on the production jacket. There are not belt straps in the back, the main zipper is not two (which isn’t necessary anyway on a short waist jacket like this) and there is a back pad for the insertion of an optional back pad, but a PE pad is not standard.

Firstgear says: _Built for the hottest of riding days, the Rush Air jacket works overtime to keep help you keep your cool. Full poly mesh construction keeps the air flowing no matter what speed you’re riding at, while abrasion-resistant impact panels keep you safe in the event things go south. In case the weather takes a slight turn, you’ll still stay dry thanks to a breathable, waterproof liner we’ve added so that your ride doesn’t have to come to an end. If the temperature drops below the comfort levels of wearing a fully vented jacket, the liner will help block some of the wind. This added feature makes the Rush Air jacket the perfect sunup to sundown jacket without the need for extra layers. _

This is a nice jacket. I am 6'3, 230 lbs, and wear size XL for shirts/ jackets, etc. I bought an XL and it fits great. The jacket moves quite a bit of air without the liner. It is comfortable and not restrictive. Pockets are adequate. Zippers ... (Read more...)

FirstGear RUSH AIR jacket Very well designed lightweight jacket that flows a lot of air. The mesh goes all the way into the armpits, which is a nice feature as some jackets stop short and allow you to swelter under the arms. This flows air nicely. (Read more...)
