Sizing Information

Generally speaking, Olympia gear will work best on those with larger builds and/or people who like their clothing to fit more casually. In contrast, our European brands fit more snug and trim (REVIT, Alpinestars are examples). We tried a size Medium jacket on Huey and an XL on Dewey (our Fit Check mannequins) and they fit just fine. You can see some shots of how they look by clicking the “View Larger Images” link above.

Olympia’s standard size chart reflects the generous sizing for jackets on the larger end of the spectrum, but we think it understates the size of the smaller jackets. To make size selection easier, we’ve developed the chart below to help you choose a size based upon your chest and belly measurements. If you find yourself between sizes in the chart, I’d advise going with the smaller due to the generally generous cut of the jacket.

Jacket Size Max Chest Max Belly
Small 40 38
Medium 43 41
Large 45 43
XL 48 46
XXL 51 49
XXXL 54 51
XXXXL 58 56

Our Two Cents

The Dakar jacket is a serious jacket for four seasons and long distances. It also has has features found on dual sport/adventure riding jackets. If you plan to do some serious riding and need lots of climate versatility and tons of storage, then this would be the jacket from Olympia to get.

The climate control features of this jacket are very extensive and the extent to which Olympia goes with this design is really unique to their brand. This jacket has a removable two stage liner which is styled to be worn off the bike as a casual/waterproof jacket… with or without the thermal liner. That combination of features makes this jacket absolutely one of a kind! I’d encourage you to take a look at our photo gallery to see the jacket, the waterproof liner and thermal liner. Without either liner installed, the jacket should flow air through to your body quite freely since it is about 40% mesh material in front and back. Mesh panels like this will flow a lot of air, and while it won’t do quite as well as a more fully mesh jacket it should work very well. And then there is the two stage liner… a waterproof jacket and then a thermal liner too. You can use one, the other, or both in the jacket to get the right amount of air flow or warmth. The removable rain jacket also has an integral hood so you can put it on under your helmet to keep rain from going down your neck. Olympia says the rain jacket can be worn over or under too. So many ways to use this jacket. And since it is styled to be suitable for use off the bike, it will great for travelers where space is tight. No need to pack a jacket for casual use!

The overall construction of the outer shell feels sturdy and well made. Like most other longer jacket styles, this one has side waist adjustment straps to get the fit right for your torso size. And the sleeves are adjustable with Velcro straps as well at the crook of the elbow. You’ll be able to adjust the sleeve to hold the elbow armor in position in case of a fall. It even has an adjustable draw cord around the bottom to seal out cold or wet weather. The main zipper is two way so you can zip the jacket open from the bottom to get a bit more room around your hips when sitting which is a common feature on longer jackets like this. And gosh, and you get lots of pockets. I count 8 plus the big rear fanny pack pocket. You’ll need to have a sharp mind to remember where all your stuff is!

CE armor is supplied for the shoulders and elbows and the back pad is included too. Some premium jackets don’t come with a back pad, or at least not a CE back pad, but this one does… no need to upgrade. There is a lot of versatility and usefulness here, which will be welcome to those that make longer trips. Its packed with features! :: Paul, 10-31-17
