Wow, I still can’t get over the price of this jacket! The Atomic 4.0 has to be one of the best “bang for the buck” jackets of 2010. Fully waterproof, a removable, insulated liner, and a very clever venting system add up to make a very versatile jacket at a great price. The Atomic 4.0 has an integrated waterproof liner, which is great for those sudden summer downpours that can spring up out of nowhere. Keep in mind that the outer shell of the jacket will absorb some water, but it won’t make it all the way down to your skin. There is also a nice storm flap behind the main zipper which should do a great job keeping air and moisture from getting in that way as well. For cooler weather, the fully sleeved insulated liner should do a great job keeping you warm, and it’s easily removed for warmer weather. Speaking of warm weather, the venting on this jacket has been thought out very well. Two bicep vents and two rear exit vents get things started, but it’s the torso vents that really stand out. Two 10.5 inch vents unzip at the front of the torso, then snap together, effectively holding them open to scoop in the maximum amount of air. All this venting should do a great job keeping you cool in the hotter months of summer. Do keep in mind that the built in waterproof liner means that air won’t reach you directly – but that’s the price to pay for a waterproof jacket. The built in liner is breathable material so the venting can still do its job. The Atomic 4.0 features an adjustable waist belt that will allow you to custom size the bottom of the jacket, preventing air and water from entering the jacket from the bottom. The sleeves also have snap take ups which help keep the elbow armor in place and reduce flapping. For storage, there are two hand warmer pockets, an internal document pocket, and a cargo pocket built in to the removable liner. There is CE armor included for the elbows and shoulders, which is actually accessible through zippers on the outside of the jacket, which is kind of unique. It definitely makes it easier to get in and out, although most people don’t pull the armor out too often (except maybe to wash the jacket). Still, it’s a nice touch, and adds to the looks of the jacket too. The back pad is Joe Rocket’s standard foam back pad, which is more substantial than most. My only nit-pick with the jacket is the lack of a pants connection zipper, but they do provide you with four belt loop snaps, so if your riding pants or jeans have belt loops, you can still attach the jacket that way. Overall, this is a lot of jacket for the money. I’m not sure how they did it, but here it is!
