Sizing Information

When we evaluated the fit of the the other SB2 jackets in Icon’s current lineup we found them to fit more snugly than most, but this SB2 Prime jacket fits larger… more like other Icon jackets. We tried the size Medium in this jacket on Huey and we put an XL jacket on Dewey. These are the sizes they normally wear and both fit great. My advice would be to wear the size you normally wear in men’s clothing.

If you look at Icon’s chest size estimates for each jacket, you might be choosing a size larger than you normally wear (example a person with a 46 chest typically is an XL, but using Icon’s chart you’d buy an XXL). I’m not sure why Icon has always understated the size of their otherwise normally fitting jackets. To help you choose a size based upon your chest and belly measurements, I’ve put together the table below. If you use our estimates of max chest, you’ll probably be choosing the size you normally wear.

Contrary to Icon’s marketing info which says this jacket has an “Icon Sport Fit”, which implies a snug torso and a large taper from chest to waist, I find this jacket to be pretty “relaxed” and therefore belly size won’t be a problem for most. But if you have a bit of a belly, you’ll want to get a measurement and make sure to choose a jacket large enough to work.

Size Icon’s Chest Est Our Max Chest Our Max Belly
Small 36-38 38-40 38
Medium 38-40 40-42 40
Large 40-42 42-44 42
XL 42-44 44-46 44
XXL 46-48 46-48 46
XXXL 48-50 48-50 46
XXXXL 52-54 52-54 50

Our Two Cents

The Icon Overlord SB2 Prime jacket is new for 2019 and its an enhancement of the “standard” Overlord SB2 jackets which have been on the market for a few years. The “Prime” adds extra protection on the shoulders and elbows and has increased venting.

The shell of this jacket is textile, but it has a LOT of lasered perforations. They are all over the chest, upper arms and back. In addition to the perf holes, the underarm areas uses a black stretch material that air will freely pass through as well. And lastly, the sleeve ends have two way zippers you can open up to allow extra air flow up your arms. I’m listing this jacket in our textile jacket department and also in the mesh jacket department because the airflow will be greater than most solid textile jackets. This jacket is supplied with a vest-type thermal liner you can use to provide some insulation, but I wouldn’t count on it being too effective for warmth. Overall, I’d recommend this jacket for temps from mild to hot. but not colder weather.

You get a complete set of armor inserts by D3O which is Icon’s “go to” brand of armor. The armor is ideal for a jacket like this since it is soft and flexible and comfortable. So there will be nothing else to buy to make this jacket fully protective. This “Prime” version also adds hard plastic armor pieces on the exterior of the shell over the shoulders and also adds a rubberized material over the elbows and forearm. I’m not sure how effective it would be to further the protective capability, but it sure looks good!

I think the overall effect of the external armor, the rubberized areas and the perforations look great with the graphics. And I find this Prime version to be comfortable to wear with an easy fit. I really like it. :: Paul, 04-30-19
