Sizing Information

We measured a selection of these jackets and also tried them on our Fit Check mannequins Huey and Dewey to see how they fit (Huey is in a Euro 52 and Dewey is in a 56) and they both look great. The overall fit is larger than most Dainese jackets so the fit is easy, even for those that want a more “American” fit.

This product is sold in European sizes. This jacket follows the usual Euro to US conversion where the US chest size is equivalent to 10 points less than the European jacket size. Example: a 56 Euro jacket is similar to a size 46/XL men’s US size. To choose a size in this jacket, I’d suggest you measure yourself with a tape and get your chest size and belly size, then use the size chart to pick the smallest size jacket that will be big enough for both your chest and belly using the chart below. Approximate US alpha sizes are also listed in the chart so you can check if the jacket size you choose is the same alpha size as you normally wear in men’s clothing.

Sizing tips for upgrading armor: If you plan to add a back protector add 1” to your measured chest and belly size. And if you plan to add the chest protectors, add an additional 1” to your chest measurement before using the size chart.

The overall cut of this particular style jacket is more relaxed than many other styles in the Dainese line. Those with a more stocky build and/or a belly will really like this style. A longer torso jacket like this looks equally good on skinny guys too because it has side torso adjusters that will take up the excess size around the middle.

Our Two Cents

The Dainese Tempest 2 D-Dry jacket is a touring style with an emphasis on keeping you dry and warm. It features a built-in waterproof liner and removable thermal liner. Like other 2019 Dainese jacket, this one has a full featured armor package.

A few days ago I reviewed the X-Tourer Dry jacket by Dainese and this jacket has a similar fit, price and shares many of the same feature, but it is made for a different temp range and climactic conditions. This jacket has a built in rain liner, so it is meant to be more “bullet proof” in terms of being able to keep water out. With the full rain liner with no openings for vents, etc, it has a better chance of keeping ALL water out. But since the liner doesn’t have openings for vents, this style will be best for mild to colder weather temps involving rain. In hot weather, I’m afraid it would be a cooker. It has zip vents on the front and back, but the air that could pass through those vents, doesn’t get past the rain liner to your skin, so the venting will work to some degree, but won’t flow like venting systems in a jacket without a fixed rain liner.

For colder weather use, this jacket will shine. It is equipped with an insulated liner which should work well. It looks a bit like a “puffy jacket” in its construction which will insulate well. The insulated liner has a front zipper arrangement that is used to zip it into the jacket OR it will zip to itself so you can use the thermal liner when you are off the bike. (sometimes called a “destination liner”). In trying out the liner by itself, I decided I’d probably just wear the liner under the jacket and not bother with affixing the liner to the jacket, but you can decide what seems more convenient. The liner sleeve length is just a touch longer than ideal. It works well when wearing it alone, but under the jacket, it tends to peek out past the sleeves a little bit, but it’s not a big deal and will probably be covered by gloves anyway.

The armor included in the shoulders and elbows very robust but comfortable. It’s a hard plastic and foam type typically found in race suits and jackets. The elbow armor extends all the way down the forearm to give great coverage. For optional back and chest armor, this jacket is set up with pockets built into the inside liner. The back armor pocket takes either of the two back pads listed below. For this jacket, I’d recommend the Manis back protector since it is most similar in construction to the elbow/shoulder armor. You can also add chest armor (also listed below) and I’d recommend the Double Chest 2 Piece Protector unit for the chest, again to better match the standard armor. With the full set of armor in this jacket, it is a FULLY ARMORED jacket.

The collar is the standard “mandarin” style, but it has a side adjuster. It’s a strap with a Velcro close. You can use that strap to snug the collar down around the neck in cold weather or when it rains. And since you may or may not have the liners installed, it gives a quick way to get a good seal either way. Another nice feature is the main zipper. It starts about six inches above the bottom hem of the jacket so when yo sit on the bike, you can unbutton the bottom button and allow the tail of the jacket to lay over your lap. That keep the front of the jacket from bunching up in front of you. Some jackets have a “two way” zipper to accomplish the same thing, but this does the trick without the additional complexity. A full around zipper is included if you want to attach the jacket to pants to make a full riding suit. :: Paul, 05-17-19
