Sizing Information

The overall fit of this jacket is very “standard”. We checked some sizes against Joe Rocket’s size chart and found the estimated chest sizes to be accurate. We also tried on a Medium and XL on our Fit Check mannequins Huey and Dewey and they look great. Therefore, I recommend you choose the size jacket you normally wear in men’s clothing. You can use the chart to choose if you know your chest size.

Longer body style jackets like this are typically pretty east to adjust for fit. This jacket has the typical side adjusters so you can get a good fit around your midsection. In their wide-open position, they will allow for a roomy belly, but they can also be snugged up by several inches for those who have a more trim mid section. I estimate that the max belly for each size jacket is about 2” less than the max chest listed in Joe Rocket’s size chart. For example, the size Large jacket has a max chest of about 44” and the max belly would be about 42”. The “waist” size listed in the chart is more just for reference.

If you are tall and often buy tall size jackets, you have the choice of black or black in this jacket. Tall sizes are about 1 1/2” taller in the sleeves and torso than standard sizes.

We find Joe Rocket jackets to be very consistent from one model to the next. For those that have owned a Joe Rocket jacket in the past, you’ll likely find a good fit knowing what size you’ve owned before.

Our Two Cents

This new Phoenix Ion Summit jacket offers the same hot weather performance as their Phoenix Ion and Phoenix 5.0 jackets, but in a longer torso version which is popular with touring and adventure riders these days.

Like the other Phoenix jackets, the majority of the body of this jacket is a larger weave, full flow mesh material. Out of all the mesh jackets we sell, I think Joe Rocket’s mesh material give the best air flow. You can literally see right through it, and therefore it offers almost no resistance to direct venting through to your body. So this jacket will perform well in the very hottest conditions, but it is also equipped with a windproof/waterproof liner that will help you on cool mornings or if you get caught in a shower. A liner like this will make the jacket usable in lower temps. But wait, there’s more! This model also includes a vest type thermal liner too. The vest liner, added to the wind/rain liner will help you take this jacket into even lower temps. So given all these climate control options, I’d say this jacket is a solid three-season design and will be great for all but cold temps.

Key areas of this jacket are reinforced with solid nylon ballistic materials. And like the shorter bodied Phoenix Ion, this jacket has the extreme reflectivity of the “ion” material over the shoulders and elbows. The fabric has a BUNCH of stitched in points of reflective material. And there’s more reflectives used elsewhere on the jacket… on the front side of the torso, down the back and across the shoulders. Just take the “View Larger Images” link above to see what all this looks like at night.

The armor included is the usual CE shoulder and elbow pieces and the back pad is a dual density foam. Its good stuff and while not a “name brand” of armor, it feels sturdy and should be very adequate for a street-use jacket like this. The back of this jacket has a short rear zip so you can attach the jacket to Joe Rocket pants if you like.

One of the reasons commuter, touring riders and adventure riders like longer length styles like this is to get more storage. This jacket has four pockets in front, an inside eyeglass/technology pocket and a back side fanny style pouch. And while its pocket arrangement isn’t as much storage as some 3/4 jacket styles, it is surely more than most mesh jackets. One reason I think they don’t go overboard on pockets is that pocket liners will cut into the exposed areas of mesh material and cut down on air flow.

Joe Rocket has always made a great mesh jacket and this one further completes their offering. In the early 2000s, Joe Rocket “invented” the mesh jacket for hot weather riding with their first Phoenix jacket. They know what they are doing! :: Paul, 04-25-18
