Sizing Information

Many Alpinestars shoes run smaller than their size would indicate and the boots run more true to their sizing chart. This one is sort of a “hybrid” style and I find they run more like the boots… true to the conversion chart.

If you know your best size from previous Alpinestars boots, then I’d advise you to choose the same size, or just use the chart to select a size based on a US street shoe size. I’d consider the width of the men’s sizes to be normal or medium (C or D).

Our Two Cents

Alpinestars offers a variety of “riding shoes” and these range anywhere from simple sneakers with no protection to shoe/boot options that offer many technical protection features. These SP-1 and SP-1 Vented shoes fall somewhere in between.

First a quick note about the difference in the “regular” SP-1 and the Vented SP-1…. it’s pretty easy; the Vented boot has perforated upper material on the outside of the boot and up around the ankle on both sides that will allow a lot of air flow. The solid boots have a solid material in those places so it is less “vented”. So if you want a shoe for use in hot weather, that vented version ought to do a fine job of funneling bunches of air through.

Here’s the parts of the boots that provide decent protection: around the ankle… there is thicker padding all around and on either side of the ankle bones. Also, there is a molded rubberized material around the heel itself, and the sole feels secure and has some reinforcement in the shank area.

But the toe area of these models isn’t reinforced at all. When you look at the pictures, you’ll see a rubberized piece on the outside of the toe that sort of looks like a toe slider, but it isn’t… it is more or less cosmetic. There is a piece of molded rubber over the shifter contact area (on top of the big toe), but the toe box itself has no real reinforcement… it is much like a plain sneaker.

So the SP-1 is positioned in price and protection somewhere in the middle of the Alpinestars lineup. The Faster shoes are at the lower end of that spectrum… more or less a high top sneaker and something like the S-MX 2 boots or SMX-3 boots would be more protective than these.

I do like the styling and the light weight on both these shoes and the lacing system gets a nod for easy functionality and the fact that the laces are trapped by the strap so they won’t get caught in your machinery. Also, the good thing about laces is that you can actually adjust the fit of the boot which isn’t an option in many styles that zip only.

Overall, a nice design that balances comfort and convenience with protection within the Alpinestars lineup, and a shoe with very nice styling. Just be aware of the protection limitations. :: Paul, 04-14-15
