Held Glove Care

Our Two Cents

Well, I’ll have to say that it is not very often that something REALLY different comes along in the glove department, but today, I’ve got the Held Air n Dry gloves right here on my desk in front of me. I’ve always been a big fan of Held gloves mostly for the overall quality of materials they use and the great fit and finish work. Of course these gloves are no departure from those attributes. What really makes this glove different is the liner arrangement. This glove is like a leather sport glove with a non-removable Gore-Tex glove liner inside. The big innovation is that you can slip your hand in so that your hand is inside the Gore Tex liner OR you slip your hand in so that you are outside the liner and your hand is in direct contact with the perforated kangaroo leather palm and the Gore Tex liner is collapsed and sits above your hand. In the first position, you’ve basically got a waterproof sport glove. In the second position you’ve got a partially vented sport glove with improved ventilation and feel for the controls. I give the whole glove very high marks for innovation. It will be the handiest thing since sliced bread for the type of rider that is into tricky new products and likes the idea of only having one pair of gloves for multiple weather scenarios. Want to hear the flip side? Here it is: in the Gore-Tex mode there is absolutely nothing I don’t like about the glove. The fit, the looks, the function… all great, but wearing the glove in the “summer” mode… well, the only downside I find is that the liner resides above your hand between it and the glove’s outer shell. It is not a big deal, but it sort of feels like an insulated winter glove on top and a summer leather glove on bottom. The alternative to this design is, of course, just to own two pairs of gloves. What to do?? Well, I’d advise that if you routinely wear gloves like this in cooler to mild weather and find yourself in the occasional rain shower then you are really going to like these gloves. And then, once in a while the weather heats up and you’d otherwise find a style like this to be too warm… poof! you can wear them in the “summer” mode to get some relief, and you still like them a lot. But if you ride primarily in warm or hot weather and only very occasionally have the need for use in wet weather, then I think you will find the liner issue I described above to be a bother and you’ll wish you just had a less bulky pair of summer gloves. MANY MANY riders will REALLY like this glove, but there are a few that will be better off with something else. Whatever camp you are in, please buy them from us! Ha! Paul :: 06-11-12

Note on Images: As always, we have a full set of feature photos of this style you can view by clicking the “View Larger Images” link above. The tricky liner feature is one time when I wish we had skill with video production since it would be easier to show in a video than large stills. Oh well, imaginative readers will get the idea!
