Sizing Information

These pants are made to be worn over street clothes and the sizing of the waist includes enough room to go over clothing. I measured all the size choices and the waist band measures exactly 2” bigger than the stated size. And I also checked the inseams… shorts are about 31” and the Talls are about 35” (see the chart below).

To choose a size, I’d recommend you measure yourself with a tape OVER the clothing you expect to wear under the pants. Since the pants are over-sized, the pants you choose will likely be the size you normally wear. A pant like this is made to ride higher on your waist than typically jeans do, so measure yourself just under the navel for the best reading. If you are between sizes, I’d recommend going with the smaller.

The pants have belt loops so you can use your favorite belt to customize the fit. A belt makes fit a WHOLE lot easier, especially as you vary what sort of clothes you wear and how much you’ve been eating. Not sure why more pants don’t just have belt loops rather than more complicated waist adjusters, but I personally like the belt arrangement.

Below is a chart I put together showing the ACTUAL measurements of each size choice.

Size Measured Waist Regular Inseam Tall Inseam Short Inseam
29 31 31.5” - -
30 32 31.5” - 31”
32 34 31.5” 34.5” 31”
34 36 32.5” 35” 31”
36 38 33” 35” 31”

40 42 33” - -
42 44 33” - -
44 46 33” - -
46 48 33” - -

Our Two Cents

Update: We scored a great closeout deal on this group of pants, so take advantage of the savings while the inventory remains.

These Escape pants could be your new “go to” pants for all sorts of riding… commuting, touring, adventure… whatever. The pants are best described as “quality” and “simple”. The overall design is much like many other overpants… they have long side zippers to allow you to put them on and take them off over your own clothing without having to change clothes. As an overpant, they’ll provide crash protection and also help keep your clothes underneath clean.

The overall construction is made simple to accomplish both the waterproofing and breathability. Lots of pants are built with removable liners to offer waterproof functionality, but these pants are constructed so the shell is made to be waterproof. The technology is called Cocona. I did a bit of research and found a good trove of info on Cocona here. In a nutshell, it sounds like a treatment made to the shell material to make it both waterproof and breathable. Sounds like the same goal as a liner such as Gore-Tex, but without HAVING the separate liner. I can see the advantage in an overpant in reduced bulk. Wearing overpants can really add a lot of unwanted thickness and these pants are much thinner. And if you pair them with trim fit undergarments, you’ll have an overall package that is better looking and more comfortable.

Let me inject a note of reality here… virtually no jackets and pants which are touted as “waterproof” really are completely waterproof, save for nylon/PVC rain suits or something as formidable as an Aerostich product, which aren’t a) tolerably comfortable, or b) affordable for most of us. So even though a lot of technology went into these pants and they are called “waterproof”, they really can’t be completely so.

Also check out the armor included. It is by D3O. We’ve been selling the D3O armor as a replacement product and it is now included in many jackets and pants, not just FirstGear but others as well. (info here) And the armor in the hips and knees is highly adjustable as to position because they’ve sewn in a bunch of Velcro to give you that adjustabililty.

When I look at the pants from the inside, I see some reinforcement over the armor in the knees. Judging from what I can see through the mesh liner, it looks like Kevlar material commonly found in reinforced jeans (but don’t hold me to that).

Other nice touches are the elasticized gaiters at the ends of the cuff to keep out wind and rain and also the small panels of, I would assume, less-meltable fabric on the insides of the legs to help if you come in contact with hot pipes. Overall, a sharp pant I think a lot of people will like. Honestly, at the full MSRP, these pants were pretty expensive, but as a closeout, I really don’t think you can go wrong. :: Paul, 09-26-15

Update: FirstGear just came out with a video demonstrating the amazing properties of D30 armor.
