Our Two Cents
For 2015, Alpinestars is introducing an all-new line of back and chest protection, and these are all part of the Nucleon series.
This Nucleon KR-1 is made of a flexible and pliable base material with a much firmer stiffener piece overlaid on the back. It is intended for racing where the highest level of protection is needed. This unit provides CE Level 2 protection.
Just for reference, Alpinestars also offers the KR-2 and KR-R protectors. The KR-2 is similar to this one, and has the same pliable base material but does not have the stiffener, and will be more comfortable for long term use and is more suited to touring or adventure riding. The KR-R is very similar to this one, with the race stiffener and all, but it attaches to an Alpinestars suit (and some jackets) with the snap near the neck.
This back protector is worn on the body with a waist strap and shoulder straps and is not dependent upon snaps or other connections in Alpinestars gear.
Accessories: You can beef up the protection of this back protector by adding either a Nucleon Chest Protector Harness and/or a Tailbone Protector (see those links below).
