Our Two Cents

Spidi currently offers four optional back protection for jackets. Here is a brief rundown of all four models. Take this link to view all current Spidi back protectors made to be worn in jackets.

Universal installation: All the back protector choices have “hook” Velcro top and bottom which engages the loop Velcro patches in the liner of Spidi jackets so installation of all these models is the same.

Warrior 510 Compact Back Protector: This back protector is a CE level one unit. It is light and flexible and would be appropriate for lighter weight street jackets (non-race jackets). This back protector has two main layers… the inside layer worn against your body is a softer layer of grey foam with a “nubbie” surface for breathability. The side away from your body is a thicker layer of plastic-over-foam surface shaped into small cubes. The hard plastic cubes can flex as a unit due to the spacing in between them and can efficiently absorb impact since each individual cube is “crushable”. One size fits all men’s jackets.

Warrior 510 Back Protector: This non-”compact” version of the Warrior 510 is much the same as the Compact version but it has a little foam “tail” which makes it’s length a bit longer than the Compact version. The tail is thin foam. I can’t imagine it makes much difference in protection. But here’s thing… the standard Warrior 510 with the tail is the same price as the Compact version. You can buy the standard one and if the tail seems too long you can just snip it off with scissors, so for this reason, I’d recommend the standard Warrior 510 over the Compact unit.

Overall width: 12.5”

Thickness: 1/2”

Warrior Level 2 Back Protector: The Level 2 version of the Warrior shares the same width and height of the Warrior 510 Compact, but it is a CE level 2 unit and therefore it is almost twice as thick. The extra thickness is the yellow colored foam layer sandwiched in between the grey foam backing and black plastic cubed layer (common to all the Warrior units). The Level 2 back protector will be the choice for more sport oriented Spidi jackets where maximum protection is the primary concern.

Warrior Evo Inside Back Protector: This “Evo” version back protector is a longer and slightly thicker version of the Warrior Level 2 back protector. We’ve installed this back protector is a regular jacket and it fits fine but will extend almost the entire length of the jacket. In smaller jackets it may well peek out below the tail of the jacket. Taller riders in larger jacket sizes might really like this largest back protector, but those in the smaller jacket sizes may find it to be too long and bulky. The molded pattern of the armor on the back side is different than the other back protectors but the idea is the same. This back protector more resembles longer/larger back protectors sold to be worn under race suits.
