Great summer option with decent impact and slide protection. I have a pair of Klim 51's, but they're baggy and thick (fall/winter/spring). I've worn the SS Critical Mass jeans in the hot/humid south and it was like wearing every day jeans. I wear a 34/30 in slim Gap jeans and the SS CM fit and feel great. A good belt and a long tee/jacket will help with possible plumbers crack. These jeans do stretch... Knee protection isn't bad, I was going to swap them with the D30 from the Klim's, but they sit properly (adjustable) and they haven't been uncomfortable, so I haven't swapped them. D30 may make knee pads a little less noticeable while riding but I don't care about that.
