Our Two Cents

The Epic jacket packs a lot of features in for the money! This 3/4 style will be a hit with commuters and long distance riders. The key advantage of a 3/4 style like this is the additional coverage provided below the waist. And with a longer jacket like this, manufacturers can pack in more storage and convenience features. I count six pockets in front, a big fanny pocket, a zippered breast pocket and then three more miscellaneous pockets in the thermal liner. Have a look at our detailed pictures to see all those. One unique feature of this jacket is a built in kidney belt. Many long distance riders will buy kidney belts, so it will be handy to have one tucked right inside the jacket. The jacket offers plenty of size adjusters…. waist, three on each arm and a bungee cord built into the hem at the bottom. Of course you get the usual complement of impact protectors in the shoulders, elbows and back. Longer style jackets like this are typically too warm to wear in hot weather and this one is probably no exception, but it does have some nice zippered vents in the bicep/shoulder area. They are strategically built to open like scoops to catch max air. The liners of the chest pockets are made of mesh so that these pockets can double as vents and on the back there are two very large exhaust vents. For colder weather you get a very nice removable thermal liner. The jacket uses Thinsulate as the insulating material in this liner, which provides great insulation in a tight space. The jacket is designed to be waterproof by way of a waterproof/breathable mid-liner. The mid-liner is permanently installed between the jacket’s outer shell and the inner mesh lining. The mid-liner design works very well to keep water off your body because the liner is built without seams or holes for pockets, snaps and such. Other designs without the mid-liner rely on waterproof zippers and sealed seams to do the job, but as you might imagine, they can’t plug every hole. The only flip-side to this design is that the jacket’s shell will soak through. Also, the liner will prevent free flow of air through the zippered vents to the skin, so the jacket’s ventilation won’t work quite as well as other style jackets that don’t use a mid-liner. Well, we can’t have everything I guess. One other neat feature to keep water out is a hood that is tucked away in the jacket’s collar. It’s made of thin spandex so it will fit under your helmet easily and will channel water down the back of the jacket rather than down your collar. Overall, I think this style is a great design for the money and will be very popular. Please take time to look at a good group of close-up photos by taking the “View Larger Pictures” link above.
