The pants are sized to be worn over very light clothing (underwear or shorts), but with the long side zipper, you could use these over jeans or slacks. If you want to do that, I’d suggest one size up from what you normally buy (or just choosing the larger size if you are sometimes between sizes). The waistband has belt loops, so if you buy them larger for overpants, but then want to use them over shorts or underwear, you could use a belt to help hold them up.
Our Two Cents
The Chicane pant is a standard textile riding pant design that offers all of the basics in protection and function at a very affordable price. These pants should work out well in cool to mild weather (no venting features for hot weather) and can take the place of everyday jeans. The waist has some elastic in it for comfort and also has belt loops to help get a good secure fit. There is a waterproof mid-liner in these pants covered by a comfortable mesh inner-lining, so they are waterproof full-time (the liner is not removable). For crash protection the knees and seat are reinforced for abrasion resistance, the hips are equipped with comfortable hip padding and the knees come with removable armor. A long thigh-high expansion zipper on the side of the legs makes it easier to get the legs of the pants down over your riding boots. Take the “View Larger Pictures” link above to see some good closeups of the pant and its features. Hmmmm… what’s up with the little stretch thing under the foot? I presume that is to keep the pant legs down in the wind, but I’d think it would be possible to entangle that on pegs, the shifter, etc, so if you decide you like the pants and will not be returning them, I’d suggest trimming that off with scissors.
