We measured and tried on a selection of these pants and the main conclusion was that the pants run a bit small in the waist as compared to REV’IT!’s published sizing chart. The amount by which they run small seems to be less in the smaller sizes and more in the larger sizes. The inseams however are very well represented in their chart.
What we’ve done is to develop a chart for you that shows each pant size and REV’IT!’s published size estimate of waist alongside our own estimate of size. We’d advise you to choose a pant size based upon our sizing estimates of course. These estimates were made assuming the pants would be worn over underwear or light clothing. If you are wearing the pants over jeans or similar heavy pants, you’ll want to err to the larger size if you are between sizes, or just go up to the next size if you are at the max range of a size. The waist size adjustment straps work pretty well to give you size adjustability… we estimate about 2”
As you can see in the chart, the pants are available in regular, short and tall inseam sizes, so choose the inseam you normally wear in slacks or jeans. The pants also have adjustability of the armor height (independent of inseam length) which can be accessed by pulling each leg inside out. Velcro allows you set the armor in different spots and you can check how the armor feels on your knee when you are sitting on the bike and decide which position it seems best. Neat!
|Pant Size||REV’IT! Estimate||Our Estimate||Inseam Reg||Inseam Short||Inseam Tall|
Measurement tip: With a style like this that MAY be used as an overpant, you’ll want to measure your waist over the clothing you intend to wear under the pants. And measure yourself fairly high up the waist because protective style pants like this are cut to ride higher on your waist than a lot of modern jean styles (so relying just upon the size jeans you buy might result in motorcycle pants that are too small). Right below the navel is about the right height on the waist for measurement.
Our Two Cents
The Sand 2 Pants by REV’IT! would be great lower body protection against impact and abrasion (if you fall), or for protection from the elements. Like the Sand 2 jacket, these pants include a lot of features to make them comfortable in about three seasons… spring, fall and winter. They do have just a bit of zippered venting which will help move some air in the summer, but being a solid textile material, the air flow you will experience will be very limited. For hot weather, I’d recommend an all-mesh or part mesh design… we have lots of them that work great. Anyway, I’ve not yet seen a pant design that can truly go four seasons AND keep you dry, so don’t think I’m knocking the design because I’m surely not. These are a very high quality pant with a very elaborate two part removable liner system to cover all the weather you’ll encounter. The pants have a waterproof/breathable barrier and also a thermal barrier. You can use these two liners in tandem or separately, or go with neither depending upon the conditions. We’ve broken down the pants and taken some good close-up photos you can see by clicking the “View Larger Images” link above. We’ve also take some night shots of the pants to show off the reflectives. These pants zip to REV’IT! jackets, but they do have a structured waist and could be worn with any brand/style of riding jacket. The pants have both a short and long zipper for attachment to a jacket. If you use these with another brand jacket, you can utilize the mating half of those two zippers which come with the pants. Just pay a tailor to install those in your jacket, which is typically a simple matter. I really like the secure way the waist closes with a hook and snap, and then there are two very effective waist adjusters on each side of the waist to help you get a tightness that is comfortable for you. The pants come with knee armor and there are pockets for optional hip pads. The pants have a couple cargo pockets which are well positioned for access when on a bike. Overall, a very nice pair of pants for street riding or touring. These would work great with the Sand 2 jacket, or really any jacket for that matter. :: Paul, 03-11-13
Note About Hip Armor: In Spring of 2014 Rev’It! made a decision to stop including EVA foam hip pads in their pants because they are preparing to conform to recent European standards that will require every part of a garment to provide a minimum level of protection and they anticipate that the foam hip pads previously offered would not meet the requirement. As an option, you can purchase CE certified hip protectors (see below) :: Paul, 04-09-14
