Sizing Information

Alpinestars publishes a really complicated sizing chart, so I’ve distilled that down for you into the table below. We checked a selection of pants with a tape and the chart is reasonably accurate. Choose a size based on the chart below. I encourage you to use a tape around your waist just below the navel to determine waist size because using jean sizes might lead to false results if your jeans are “vanity sized”.

The pants have side adjusters and also the front waist closure offers a bit of adjustment too. The max waist in the size chart is measured with all the adjusters to the max, and they don’t get bigger, but you can effectively adjust down a bit. Therefore, if you measure out between sizes, choose the larger.

Pant Size Waist Range Inseam
Small 30-32 30.5
Medium 32-34 31.5
Large 34.5-36 32.5
XL 36-39 34
XXL 39-41 34.5
XXXL 41-44 35.5
XXXXL 44-46 36

Our Two Cents

Update: These pants have been recalled due to a sizing issue. They may become available in the future, but for now, they are not.

The name Sonoran Air Drystar Pants pretty much gives away the key functional ingredients here. These pants are mostly a textile shell, but with good size mesh panels on the front and back of the thigh and on the front on the shin areas of the legs. The panels will face the wind blast and therefore the wind should blow right through (more or less of course depending upon your bike’s style of body work) and you’ll find that to be a comfort in hot weather. But the pants also come with the removable Drystar waterproof liner. You can put that liner in when it rains to keep water from coming through to your jeans/underwear… whatever you have on underneath. Also, in cooler weather, the liner could be utilized to block the full wind flow. The liner won’t insulate of course, but having a way to block the wind will certainly extend the comfort range into lower temps. And you can wear undergarments to stay warm as it gets even colder out.

The venting capabilities of these pants are the key ingredient here, and the rest of the pant is largely like all the other textile pants from Alpinestars this season. The pants have the adjustable waist setup so you can fine tune the tightness, and if you are using an Alpinestars jacket with a zip connection, you can fasten the pants to jacket with the almost full around zip.

At the leg, you’ll see that there is a side zipper that will open the pant leg up to about the knee. While it isn’t the full side zip like you find on a true overpant, I think that zip length will be high enough to allow you to step into and out of the pants without taking your boots off. One caveat though…. the removable liner doesn’t have a side opening, so if you are utilizing the liner, you won’t be able to “step into” the pants with boots on. You’ll need to take your boots off to get into them. But considering that any zip opening makes it hard to for a liner to be completely waterproof, it is a compromise that has a hidden benefit… the liner WILL keep the water out.

The armor in the knees of the pants is a standard CE insert and is adjustable for height. There are foam hip pads installed the in armor pockets too, but if you want significant protection in the hips, add the optional hip protectors (see the link below) because the standard foam pads are more or less just fillers.

The overall style of the pants is sharp and look trim. The materials are top notch as is the tailoring (as all Alpinestars products are). Take the link above and see our photo gallery for a more detailed look. :: Paul, 04-19-16
