The pants are sold in ordinary US Alpha sizes and Alpinestars offers a chart to estimate the waist size for each alpha size. The conversion estimates are about what you’d expect for each US alpha size but the actual pants are a bit smaller than what Alpinestars estimates. In our Fit Check with Hewey and Dewey, the size Med pants came close to a fit while the XL pants were further off (the under-sizing issue gets a little worse with increased size).
To help you get the right size, we’ve developed a chart showing what Alpinestars advises and what we observed during our test. Please note that we are listing a waist size range for each pant. That is because the pants have adjustment tabs on the waist that allow you to snug them down if needed.
These pants don’t have long side zippers like you’d find on overpants, so the intention is that you would wear these over underwear. You could wear them over street clothes, but without the side zippers, you’ll have a bit of time putting them on and taking them off. If you want to wear them over street clothes, then just add a couple inches to your waist and use the chart to choose (about one size larger than normal).
|Alpha Size||Alpinestars Waist
|Small||31 to 32.5||28-31||33|
|Medium||33.5 to 35||31-33||33|
|Large||36 to 37.5||33-34.5||33.5|
|XL||38 to 39.5||34-36||34|
|XXL||40.5 to 42||36-38||34|
|XXXL||43 to 44.5||38-40||34|
Our Two Cents
The AST-1 pant by Alpinestars is a bit sportier design than most of the other textile choices. Like a leather sport race pant, they have the expansion zones above each knee and a pretty distinctive “pre-curved” cut to them. But unlike sport/race pants they are cut like ordinary pants at the hem so they fit over boots (rather than tucked). So I guess you could characterize them as “sport riding pants for the street rider”. But no matter what you call them, they are mainstream enough to work for just about any type of rider. These pants have a textile shell and a built in waterproof and breathable membrane to keep you dry. There are no venting features so consider these pants for mild to cold and/or wet weather use. They’d be OK in moderate or maybe even warm weather, they’d certainly be cookers in summer. The pants come with removable armor in the knees and light foam pads for the hips. You can use the all-around zipper for connection to Alpinestars jackets. The waist tab has a very secure metal hook type closure that won’t pop open under pressure, so feel free to eat up! Overall, these are very nice pants. Just be careful about the sizing issues (see our recommendations above).
