Sizing Information

These pants are unique in that they have snaps that allow you to create a hem to get an imseam that fits you best. At the longest, they have a 35” inseam, but can be shortened to either 32.5” and 31” inseams. Below we have listed the maximum waist size that each size pant will accommodate. Velcro adjustments on the waist will allow you to reduce the waist by about four inches less than the max measurements below. If you intend to wear these as overpants I would recommend buying one size larger than you otherwise would. For example, if your waist is 30” and you want to wear these pants over your jeans select a Medium with the max waist of 32”.

Alpha Size Max Waist
XS 28”
Small 30”
Medium 32”
Large 34”
XL 36”
XXL 38”

Our Two Cents

The Alter Ego men’s pants have been such a hit for Joe Rocket, they are now offering them in women’s sizes too. I really like the overall design of these pants. And while they are a bit more in price than less adaptable designs (such as solid textiles or all-mesh pants), they will be more comfortable for a wide range of riding situations and more practical for touring. If you tour in the mountains for example, you might see temperature ranges from the 40s to the 80s all in one day. And since storage space on a bike is always at a premium it would be handy only to pack one pair of pants to cover all the riding situations. These pants have a zip-off panel that exposes a large mesh vented area from just over each knee, all the way around the back of the pants to the other knee (take the “View Larger Pictures” link above for some close-ups of this). With this panel removed and with the liner removed, you’ll get some reasonable air flow through the pants for comfort in hot weather. For cold weather you replace the zip-off panel and use the liner as a wind-stopper and you’ll be comfortable. The liner can be used as a waterproof barrier as well. The legs have long side zippers to allow you to use these pants as “overpants” so you can wear street clothes underneath if you like, and you won’t have to find a place to change clothes to take them off—ideal for commuters. The waist is adjustable so you’ll be able to get comfortable whether you use them over clothes or not. You get CE armor for the knees and also some removable padding in the hips. To complement the adjustable hem length feature, the armor position is also adjustable. There is a short rear zipper for attachment to compatible Joe Rocket jackets, so feel free to use these pants with any of the textile jacket designs (not just the Alter Ego jacket). You also get the mating half of the zipper so you can easily have an alterations person install the zipper half in a non-compatible jacket to take advantage of the feature. Overall, I think this pant is a very good value given their features and adaptability.

I love these pants! I rarely wear them with the liner in, so the zip off panel really helps a lot with heat. In the winter I wear thermals under it and that helps because yes, wind does come through the zipper. (Read more...)

Gloves: I absolutely love the externally stitched AGV gloves. They are good in all but the hottest and coldest weather. The gauntlet length is enough that I can tuck them into my mesh jacket to stay cool, or tuck my leather jacket into them to sta... (Read more...)
