Sizing Information

We tried the size Medium in this jacket on Huey and we put an XL jacket on Dewey. These are the sizes they normally wear and both fit great. My advice would be to wear the size you normally wear in men’s clothing.

If you look at Icon’s chest size estimates for each jacket, you might be choosing a size larger than you normally wear (example a person with a 46 chest typically is an XL, but using Icon’s chart you’d buy an XXL). Icon’s styling has always been sort of loose as compared to other brands’ sport style jackets. This probably explains why the size chart understates the chest size range for any given alpha jacket size.

My personal advice for a good fit that is snug enough not to flap or inflate while riding would be to buy the size you normally wear in men’s clothing. We’ve added a column to the table below to give you our estimate of max chest and belly size for each jacket size. If you prefer a loose fit, then Icon’s estimates would be appropriate.

Contrary to Icon’s marketing info which says this jacket has an “Icon Sport Fit”, I find the taper from chest to waist to be pretty “relaxed” and therefore belly size won’t be a problem for most. But if you have a bit of a belly, you’ll want to get a measurement and make sure to choose a jacket large enough to work.

Size Icon’s Chest Est Our Max Chest Our Max Belly
Small 36-38 38-40 36
Medium 38-40 40-42 38
Large 40-42 42-44 40
XL 42-44 44-46 42
XXL 46-48 46-48 44
XXXL 48-50 48-50 46
XXXXL 52-54 52-54 50

Our Two Cents

I like this new Sanctuary jacket. The shell is leather and textile. The leather is thick and very sturdy feeling and the textile material is too. I sometimes pan Icon styles that are too “unstructured” and don’t feel like they’d do a good job holding the armor in place or resisting abrasion in a fall, but this jacket has a lot of “heft” to it overall. I really want you to take the “View Larger Images” link above and see the close up photos. There are a lot of cool materials being used here, and the styling of this jacket is BOLD. The molded rubber ICON logo on the front and the logo piece on the upper back both look really good. And we also took a shot of the stamped leather piece on the elbows which is unique and something I’ve not seen before. The black fabric pieces on the chest are a flow-through mesh material and the fabric on the arms is a solid (not flow-through) textile material. As there are perforations on much of the lower torso, I’d say this jacket will be pretty comfortable even in very warm weather. For cooler weather though, the jacket is equipped with a full-sleeve removable liner. The liner has nice cushy cuffs on the sleeve ends to keep cold air out. The jacket has a standard selection of pockets and a couple features to help you keep your headphone wires situated. You can see all these small details by taking the “View Larger Images” link above. Overall, I think this is a sharp style and unlike a lot of other Icon jackets which are more focused on style, this jacket will be very effective protection in case of a fall. And to get both the style AND the protective features in one package is what you want! :: Paul, 03-07-14
