Sizing Information

This shirt fits about like we’d expect for “normal” US men’s sizing. We measured a selection of sizes and also tried these on our fit test mannequins. Huey is wearing a medium and Dewey is in the XL. These are the sizes they normally wear. The fit is looks good.

I’d advise to choose the size you normally wear in men’s clothing. This shirt fairly close to the body with not much room left (a good fit for motorcycling), so if you are between sizes, I’d suggest choosing the larger.

To make size selection easier, we’ve developed the chart below to help you choose a size based upon your chest and belly measurements. If you have a bit of a belly, just make sure that the vest you choose will be big enough for both your chest and belly.

Note: if you plan to add a back protector to this jacket, then add 1” to the chest/belly measurements before choosing a size.

Jacket Size Max Chest Max Belly
Small 38 36
Medium 40 38
Large 43 41
XL 46 44
XXL 48 46
XXXL 51 49

Our Two Cents

As protective riding shirts go, this Trilobite Timber Shirt is pretty impressive. The shirt comes with a set of shoulder and elbow armor and a back pad is optional. It’s fully lined with Kevlar fabric.

The plaid material used in this shirt is just what you’d expect by looking at it… a medium weight flannel, but unlike other kinds of shirts like this, the entire shirt is lined with a heavy layer of Kevlar fabric. Some shirts like this will have reinforcement only in the shoulders and elbows, but this one is ALL OVER. When I first unpackaged it, I was kind of shocked at the overall heft of it. The Kevlar layer is sandwiched between the outer flannel and a nice black nylon mesh liner. The inside liner has a couple of patch pockets so you can store some things in the shirt and there are also a couple of patch pockets on the front with a flap and snap closure.

The front looks like it snaps closed, and it does, but behind that row of snaps is a full front zipper, which is important to keep the shirt on your body and covering your torso in case of a fall (just snaps would pop right open). A flannel shirt like this should be pretty comfortable in a wide range of temps because it isn’t windproof and so air should flow through it somewhat. Under each arm is a zip vent to help you get even more air flow through the shirt in warmer temps.

With the shirt, you get a full set of foam armor. Its pretty thick and the packaging says its Level 1 armor. Their literature says level 2, but it is actually level 1. But its an appropriate thickness and bulk for a shirt. When I first tried it on, I thought it was going to be ridiculously bulking feeling, but once it molded to my shoulders, it looked much better. You can see there is an extra layer, but it isn’t too much. A back pad pocket is included in the lining of the shirt. Trilobite says they offer a back pad, but at the time of this writing, they had not yet made it available. But we checked and the D3O unit we sell fits just fine. I’d recommend the level one D3O unit for a garment of this weight and thickness. Take the link below to add that back pad.

Overall, I really like this shirt and since it does have a full Kevlar liner, I think it takes the protection up a notch from most riding shirts. :: Paul, 11-25-18

Trilobite says: Timber is a favorite lumber style shirt customized for vintage riders. The shirt is reinforced with complete protective aramid fibers lining made with Kevlar® by DuPont™ technology. Additionally, the shirt is boosted up with a set of Trilobite CE Level 2 shoulder and elbow protectors, so you can have extra protection right where you want it. Optionally, you can equip this shirt with Trilobite® Premium Protection CE Level 2 at back to increase the safety while riding. The shirt has the direct embroidery on back and metal logo in the front pocket. Wearing a piece of protective clothes can look really awesome. It is perfect for easy riding and so comfortable for hanging around when you are off your wheels of steel. When it comes to hot summer days you can just open the air ventilation in underarm zones.
