Sizing Information

We tried a size Medium and an XL on our Fit Check mannequins Huey and Dewey. Those are sizes they usually wear in an “American” cut jacket. This jacket from REV’IT! fits well enough and it looks sharp, but there is very minimal room left. Many brands from Europe exhibit a fit like this, such as Alpinestars. If you look at REV’IT!’s published size chart (below), you’ll see their estimate of chest size is at least a full size smaller than what you’d find in equivalent US designed clothing.

We measured each jacket and tried them on and we’ve concluded that the fit is just about one-half size smaller than what you would find in ordinary US men’s clothing. The amount the jackets are undersized is not as severe as REV’IT!’s size chart would have you believe. For most people, this means you’ll be able to buy the size you normally wear if you want a snug, European style fit. If you want a looser American fit, or if you are between sizes, choose one size larger.

Below is the REV’IT!-published chest size for each jacket’s alpha size along with our estimate of max chest and max waist/belly. This particular style is not a “sport” oriented style so there is not a lot of taper from chest to waist, and with a style like this you can effectively tailor the fit of the waist with the side waist adjusters, which makes the jacket look great and fit great, so don’t worry if your waist/belly is smaller than the max. We only list this for those that have a belly so they can know what minimum size they’d have to choose to fit the belly.

Our Two Cents

What’s new in the new Sand 3 jacket you ask? Well, first off, it is a LOT like the previous Sand 2 which is a great thing, since there is tons to like in this and the previous “do it all” Sand 2 jacket. I see a few key things that are a bit different: 1) The colors and styling are a little bit different… a bit less “vivid” and a little more “earthy” in my opinion, but really not a significant departure from the signature “REV’IT! look”; 2) The armor in the shoulders and elbows is CE Level 2 SeeFlex style (take the “view larger images” link above to see shots of that). This armor “feels” about the same bulk and stiffness as the previous CE armor, but apparently does a better job with crash protection. I say that based on the “level 2” rating; 3) This jacket has attachment points for a couple different aftermarket neck brace setups. As of this writing, we aren’t offering those optional devices, but the attachment points are there.

The Sand 3 jacket’s standout feature is with climate control. This jacket has a pretty elaborate removable liner system that lets you choose whether to use a thermal liner, or a rainproof liner, or both together depending upon the conditions you have at the moment. It is about as close to a four season jacket as you can get. I’d say it is about a 3.5 season design. For warmer weather, the jacket has four front zip vents and a rear exhaust vent across the shoulder blade area. These vents will allow some pretty good air flow, but for really, really hot weather, a solid textile with vents isn’t going to be as good as a full mesh design…. that is why I dub this one a 3.5 season model. But back to the liner system…. it’s an easy concept really…. it has two liners, and you just experiment in different temps and see how each work singularly or in tandem. Once you get some experience with them, you’ll know what works best for you.

Having great venting like you see with the Sand 3 jacket is really a plus on a rugged, heavily built jacket like this and is especially welcome on a longer “3/4 length” jacket like this. When it gets hot out you can use the larger zippered vents on the front chest, and those up the sleeve and the two exhaust vents in back to move some good air. And since the waterproof liner is removable (not a fixed liner design), the air that moves through all those vents will pass through the shell directly to your shirt underneath which helps a lot! REV’IT! also offers an optional cooling vest you can zip in to help with hotter/dryer conditions (see below). The zippers on the sleeves in the Sand 3 jacket are longer…. in fact they go from the cuff almost all the way up to the shoulder!

Other little niceties I like are the softly padded collar trim and the adjustable collar tightness. I also like the quality of the Hydratex waterproof membrane. It really looks high-end in person. And the removable thermal liner is plushy and better than most others I’ve seen. There is a connection for zipping the jacket to pants. The connection from the jacket to the pants is the usual short rear zipper, but there is also another longer zipper to attach the rain proof liner (when in use) to the pants (in lieu of the short rear zip). The zipper is longer so that you are sealing the liner over the pant waist to keep the liner from riding up and exposing your lower back. It’s a nice feature in wet weather for sure. One last thing I noted, and one where I had to actually consult the rep to know the purpose are the two front “rails”, the ones that go over the shoulder and the two down the back. They are pieces of webbing that are sewn to the jacket at intervals to allow you to make attachments, like gloves, a GoPro, etc to the jacket. These multi-purpose connections also can work with attaching a neck brace. Lots of uses!

I think REVIT has a great offering in the Sand jacket line… plenty of features and great overall quality. This is one of their “can’t go wrong” designs for the 3/4 jacket market. I’m sure you’ll be pleased with it. Also, you can pair the jacket with the matching pants and gloves to make the whole outfit (see below). :: Paul, 02-14-17

Add a Back Protector: This jacket is made with a pocket to accept a Seesoft CE Level 2 Back Protector Insert type RV (RV refers to the shape). For sizes Small or Medium, choose size 4; for Large thru XXL, choose size 5 and for XXXL and larger choose size 6.
