Sizing Information

We measured and tried on a number of sizes in this jacket and found them to fit as expected for a street sport style. I’d encourage you to order the size you normally wear in men’s clothing for sizes Small through XL, and since there is limited standardization on fit above XL, I’d recommend those who wear larger sizes to measure their chest and belly and choose based on the chart I’ve put together below. If you find yourself between sizes, I’d encourage you to order the larger. The overall fit of this jacket runs just a bit small as compared to other Fly jackets. I think it is because jacket-in-a-jacket construction adds a bit more thickness than other styles.

The waist/belly in this style runs about standard for a street/sport style. The max belly runs about 4” less than the chest. Below is a chart we put together with approximate max chest and belly sizes for every “alpha” size. You can use this chart to choose a size based upon your chest and belly measurements.

Size Max Chest Max Belly
Small 40 36
Medium 42 38
Large 44 40
XL 46 42
XXL 50 46
XXXL 54 50
XXXXL 58 54

Note: This chart mirrors Fly’s official size chart for sizes XL and above, but shows larger sizes than Fly’s chart for smaller sizes. Their chart for the smaller sizes is not accurate.

Our Two Cents

The Strata jacket by Fly Racing is really two jackets in one… its a full mesh style for max airflow for use in really hot weather. And when you use the outer shell, it becomes a solid textile style with waterproof capability. And for really cold weather, you can use the included zip out thermal liner. With the two shells and the zip out liner, this style is a true four season design.

Take a look at our photo gallery to see how this jacket is put together. The first layer is the mesh jacket. It has the armor installed in the shoulders, elbows and back like any other mesh jacket. The mesh layer has textile reinforcements in the shoulders and down the backs of the arms, so its overall construction is quite good for crash protection. And being a full mesh layer it will blow plenty of air for hot weather months.

The outer layer goes over the mesh jacket entirely. The main zipper of the mesh jacket zips to a couple long zippers just inside of the main zipper of the textile shell, so when installed, it goes in much like a removable liner layer. The outer shell is made like most other solid textile styles. And the outer jacket includes a waterproof layer too so you’ll be good for wet weather use The outer shell has a couple zip vents in the shoulder area and a couple rear exhaust vents so you can pass some air through during those moderate temperature days. And finally, then jacket includes a removable thermal vest-type liner. With the liner installed this jacket will do a good job in cold weather.

Each layer has a good selection of pockets, and they each even have a phone pocket with a grommet to pass through your headphone wires. I’d suggest you take a look at the photo gallery to check those features out. Compared to other “four season” styles, this one is very complete and the overall quality is very good, especially considering the very reasonable price. :: Paul, 09-07-17

Add an upgraded back protector?: This jacket comes with a simple foam back pad and Fly doesn’t offer a CE rated upgrade, but I find that our most popular upgrade back protector by D3O fits the mesh pocket in this style very well. The men’s size Back pad in either Level 1 or 2 fits both men’s and women’s (the women’s size back pad is too small for the women’s jacket pocket, so get the men’s there too). You could get level 2, but for a general duty jacket like this, I think the Level 1 upgrade will be most comfortable and practical.
