Sizing Information

We tried the size Medium in this jacket on Huey and we put an XL jacket on Dewey. Both jackets fit well, but there wasn’t a lot of room for error in the waist/belly area. These jackets are cut a bit differently than some… the body of the jacket is a couple inches longer than other styles like this and the tail is particularly long in the back. And because the jacket comes down further on the body, and because the overall cut tapers quite a bit, it means that it will work best on those with an athletic body… meaning a person with a relatively full chest/shoulders and with a relatively narrow waist. Those sporting much of a belly and/or those with a wider-than-average waist may not find a fit in this one. Also, it will work better on average to tall people than shorter people (because of the body length).

I generally advise that Icon’s size chart states the chest size of each jacket a couple inches too small, but with this style, I’ll have to say that their chart is about correct. That means that the jackets run snug as compared to what you might expect if you bought the size you normally wear in men’s clothing. I’d highly recommend you measure your chest and belly to make sure the jacket you choose will be big enough for both the chest and belly.

Size Icon’s Chest Est Our Max Belly
Small 36-38 34
Medium 38-40 36
Large 40-42 38
XL 42-44 40

Our Two Cents

The Hypersport Leather Jacket and its very close sibling, the Hypersport Prime Jacket, are both constructed of a very new and interesting mix of materials. The shell of the jacket is mostly leather but there are lots of other materials as well.

First, let me tell you the main difference between the Hypersport and the Hypersport Prime. The Prime adds molded plastic armor pieces to the shoulders and elbows. You can see these in the pictures and in the video. And the back panel of the Prime is a combination of the Tech-Mesh material with large TPU pieces fused to it. It gives a look of a race back protector integrated right into the jacket. But I think those external armor pieces are only somewhat protective… more of an upgraded look than anything. Both versions are fitted with CE certified D3O armor for the elbows, shoulders and back, which are the primary impact protection components. On the standard Hypersport the elbows, shoulders and back are the same race quality leather as the rest of the jacket. Personally, I think the price hike for the Prime is quite reasonable. In many other product lines I’ve seen BIG price adders from such things, but in this model the extra $35 doesn’t sound like much.

I really like both versions of the jacket and aside from those differences, the rest of the look, fit and function are quite similar. The most notable thing is the race fit of the jacket (discussed in detail above). This is really unlike previous Icon models. Many previous models said “attack fit” but really they were very casual as compared to “traditional” sport leathers (like Alpinestars for example). But these jackets are a trim fit and quite high tech in appearance and use of materials. The Tech-Mesh material is very interesting. It looks like a plastic screen material over an expanded metal shaped backing. Hard to describe, I know, but it feels like it would flow a lot of air but also be VERY resistant to abrasion. And, best of all it flexes well and looks really neat.

Also, the jackets use molded neoprene extensively… around the cuff ends, on the sides of the waist and in back of the collar. The cuff ends are SO simple… just a neoprene stretch material. Just stick your arm through the sleeve and it seems to work and it is super soft and comfy. I’m not so sure about the thumb loops though… before gloves, after gloves? I’d have to experiment. I think it is more novelty than anything and they don’t feel like they’d last near as long as the jacket. I’m betting they’ll wind up getting cut off after the first few uses (but I’m a negative nelly sometimes). Lastly, the pocket layout is worth a mention. There is a nice selection of pockets on the inside (which is good because there are zero on the outside). Just take the “View Larger Images” link above to see some good pics of those pockets.

Anyway, these jackets get kudos for great styling, improved sport fit (if you are the right body type that is) and impressive use of new materials. I like them! :: Paul, 09-05-14
