Icon Device Leather Jacket

We tried the size Medium in this jacket on Huey and we put an XL jacket on Dewey. These are the sizes they normally wear and both fit well… if anything, a bit snug. My advice would be to wear the size you normally wear in men’s clothing if you are an average to slim person. Those with broad shoulders or a bit of a belly should check the sizing chart before choosing to make sure your “normal” size will offer enough room in the chest and belly. If not… go up a size.

If you look at Icon’s size chart, you will see that the chest sizes listed are a bit smaller than what we see for most “alpha sized” jackets. This is a more sport fit and they do fit slimmer than some other brands. This interpretation of fit is what we see in many “European cut” jackets.

The arm length and torso length are generous. Not overly-long, but this jacket will work best on people of average or above-average height. Average to slim builds will like this where burly types might not. In summary: Average to tall, average to skinny will like. Short and stout probably won’t.

This table lists Icon’s estimated chest sizes for each “alpha size”, which we find to be accurate. We’ve added a column to the table below to give you our estimate of max belly size for each jacket size.

The Device line of jackets and pants from Icon are headed toward simplicity rather than more complex. I personally like the looks of the leather jackets we chose for photographs (take the View Larger Images link above). Typically when we do large closeouts of gear, the more simple colors and styles do a lot better than the more flashy ones and I think Icon has picked up on that trend. Another small, but comfort feature I like is the design of the collar. I don’t have a long skinny neck like some and this new “v-neck” design works for me. When you reach forward for the grips on a bike, the body of a jacket will ride up just a a bit and this vee shape of the neck keeps it from pressing on your adam’s apple. I also think it looks sorta different and sharp. This jacket, like other Icon styles, is made of very high quality and thick leather that will do a great job of protecting your skin in case of a slide. The simplicity of the design leaves out any venting features, so consider this jacket for cold to mild weather use. For colder weather you can use the vest-type insulated liner which zips in to this jacket. The tail of the jacket is cut longer than most so that will keep the draftiness to a minimum too. One neat new feature I like is the little rubber zipper garage on the front pocket zippers which keeps the zipper pull tucked away neatly. It is sort of a solution to a problem that never really existed, but I like it anyway. Also, take a look at the photo of the perfed leather placket behind the main zipper. I’ve seen this on past designs and thought it was a neat touch, but it really jumps out on the red jacket we used for the pictures. Of course the jacket comes with CE armor in the shoulders and elbows and it has a standard dual density back pad (upgradable below BTW). Overall, I really like this style and if clean lines and minimum gadgetry are your thing, then you’ll like it too. :: Paul, 09-14-12
