Sizing Information

We tried the size Medium in this jacket on Huey and we put an XL jacket on Dewey. These are the sizes they normally wear and both fit great. My advice would be to wear the size you normally wear in men’s clothing.

If you look at Icon’s chest size estimates for each jacket, you might be choosing a size larger than you normally wear (example a person with a 46 chest typically is an XL, but using Icon’s chart you’d buy a XXL). Icon’s styling has always been sort of loose as compared to other brands’ sport style jackets. This probably explains why the size chart understates the chest size range for any given alpha jacket size.

My personal advice for a good fit that is snug enough not to flap or inflate while riding would be to buy the size you normally wear in men’s clothing. We’ve added a column to the table below to give you our estimate of max chest and belly size for each jacket size. If you prefer a loose fit, then Icon’s estimates would be appropriate.

Contrary to Icon’s marketing info which says this jacket has an “Icon Sport Fit”, I find the taper from chest to waist to be pretty “relaxed” and therefore belly size won’t be a problem for most. But if you have a bit of a belly, you’ll want to get a measurement and make sure to choose a jacket large enough to work.

Size Icon’s Chest Est Our Max Chest Our Max Belly
Small 36-38 38-40 36
Medium 38-40 40-42 38
Large 40-42 42-44 40
XL 42-44 44-46 42
XXL 46-48 46-48 44
XXXL 48-50 48-50 46
XXXXL 52-54 52-54 50

Our Two Cents

Combining materials like Icon has done with the Compound Jacket has advantages. The shell of this jacket is a combination of leather and textile. Leather is used in the elbow and shoulder areas because leather offers the best abrasion protection for motorcycling. The remainder of the jacket is textile with some nifty molded rubber embellishments. The use of textiles makes the jacket lighter and more comfortable to wear. An all-leather jacket with this many added features would be HEAVY, but even with the molded rubber extras, this one is about average in over all weight. Speaking of the molded rubber extras… there are four on the front that form small vents (lower arms and chest) and two on the shoulders that are situated above zippered vents to form an air scoop which should be pretty effective. On the back, there is an elaborate upper back protector. The center part is hard plastic and would have some protective effect. It also looks great. And then down low is a molded rubber Icon logo (non functional… just for looks). I like the two front zippered storage pockets. They have LONG zippers that would be usable even with gloves on. The combo leather/tex shell and the insulated full-sleeve thermal liner will work in cool to cold temps. If you remove the liner and open the vents then you can be comfortable in mild to warmer weather. (If you do most of your riding in mild to hot weather, then have a look at the Compound Mesh jacket, a leather/mesh combo jacket). The jacket offers a lot of other, more usual features you can check out by taking the “View Larger Images” link above. Overall, I like this jacket. In checking it out, I was impressed with the overall rugged feel and quality materials. For a combo textile/leather design with all the features this one has, I think the price is justified.
