Sizing Information

We checked the sizing of this style with our Fit Check mannequins Huey and Dewey. The mannequins are wearing size Medium and XL jackets respectively which are their “usual” sizes. The fit of the jackets is snug. We also measured a selection of jackets and confirmed that they run about one size smaller than most US branded gear, so that means most people will find a fit by buying one size larger than they normally would choose. Just for reference, we are finding the fit of most new 2017 gear from both the Tour Master and Cortech brands to run about one size smaller than in past years.

Given the snug sizing issue, we highly recommend that you measure your chest and belly and confirm your size choice based upon your measurements. The chart below shows the measured max chest and belly for each size jacket. The figures in the chart come from our measurements of jacket samples. Our finding also match up with Cortech’s latest size chart for apparel introduced in 2017 and later.

These jackets taper moderately from chest to waist… about 3”. If you have a bit of a belly, just make sure the size you choose is big enough for your belly as well as your chest. For example, we list the size XL as a 44 max chest and so the max belly for that jacket would be about 41. If your belly/waist is smaller than this, it shouldn’t be a problem because the jackets have a lot of adjustability in the waist.

One special note of caution: The sleeve size of these jackets through the elbow forearm area re rather trim. If you have average to skinny arms, you’ll love the fit, but if you are “stout” in that regard they’ll likely be too tight for you.

Our Two Cents

This new Piuma jacket for 2017 is a great blend of heavy weight leather and mesh. It will give comfort in hot weather but also has enough leather to give the jacket “heft” and to reinforce the crash prone areas. This is one of the rare jacket styles that can give a high level of crash protection in a jacket that flows a lot of air for hot weather use.

Have a close look at the pictures; you’ll see that over 50% of the surface area of this jacket is flow thru mesh material. Its a higher grade of mesh than you’ll find on most light weight summer jackets though. Its thick and sturdy feeling, kind of like the look and feel of nylon luggage. The weight of the mesh works well with the leather to make for a very sturdy design… much more sturdy that all-mesh jackets. We’ve seen styles like this from REVIT and also Joe Rocket so it isn’t alone in this world, but it is pretty rare. It will appeal to riders who need the air flow, but want more protection than the lighter weight mesh jackets can give.

The armor included in this jacket is the viseo-elastic kind similar to D3O. It feel VERY substantial, so there is nothing else you’ll need in the armor department! The leather material used is very thick and combined with the heavy duty mesh material really gives this jacket substantial weight. I think you’ll agree it can take a spill and give very good protection. The zippers are heavy duty as well… especially the main zipper… much better than prior zips from Cortech.

Have a look at our photo gallery to see the pocket selection…. its pretty usual for a street style jacket like this. The jacket includes a vest-type liner to cut a bit of chill to extend the usable range of this jacket a bit (but only a bit since the shell is mostly mesh. I’d recommend this jacket for cool-ish to very hot weather.

I like the expansion material behind each shoulder and above the elbows. That, along with the stretch material in the forearm helps give you flexibility to move in an otherwise trim/sport cut jacket. I like the soft roll of neoprene around the collar too. Overall, I think this is a very nice jacket for those who want sport/race level protection for hot summer days. With the all-black styling and the matte finish leather, I can see this working for cruiser riders that want more protection than the usual non-armored black leather styles out there. :: Paul, 12-19-17
