Sizing Information

We tried on the Blast jackets in a size XL and Medium on our Fit Test Mannequins. The XL fit the larger guy pretty well, but the Medium was quite large for a Medium. After digging into the sizing issue a bit further, I concluded that the smaller sizes fit a full size larger than they should and the bigger sizes fit closer to what they should.

I put the following chart together to help you choose a size. I’ve listed the max chest based on measurements and also I’ve estimated what “alpha” size each jacket size fits like. For example, the Medium measures out with a max chest of 45” and with that chest, it will fit like a large to an XL in men’s clothing.

Jacket Size Measured
Max Chest
Fits Like…
Small 43 Med to Large
Medium 45 Large to XL
Large 47 XL
XL 49 XL to XXL
XXL 51 XXL
XXXL 53 XXXL

Our Two Cents

As I’m writing this, it is getting HOT outside (June in Texas) and hot weather is when you’d want this jacket. The shell is mostly blow-thru mesh material. Solid textile is used on the shoulders, elbows and other crash prone areas to beef it up a bit. Overall, this is a lightweight jacket. We offer heavier duty models (that cost more of course) but a jacket like this will serve the average street rider well for the hot months of the year they ride. I’d characterize the shoulder and elbow armor as being better than average. It is wide and soft but has good firmness to it. The back pad is just average, but you can upgrade that with the Forcefield options below if you are concerned. I personally think the Super Lite choice would be appropriate for this jacket, but either will fit the pocket in the jacket.

Storage isn’t a long suit in this jacket. You do get two standard hand warmer pockets and one breast pocket for your wallet or phone, and there is also a little key pocket on the end of the left sleeve… something I haven’t seen in a while. But there are no inside pockets. The jacket has some adjustments for fit which are simple and look like they will work well.

The jacket has a removable liner which can be used to shed some water if it rains, or to act as a wind block on cool mornings or over passes. The liner is very thin… almost see-thru in fact. The material feels strong though and it being so thin means it won’t alter the fit when used (or not). And of course it will pack away in a super small space when not used. Be advised though, even though the removable liner is listed as waterproof, the way it is installed in the jacket won’t make the jacket waterproof. It zips into place on either side of the main zipper, but the main zipper isn’t waterproof so it will leak. Consider this liner to be water resistant only. I think its best use will be for blocking the wind as described above.

We included shots of all these features in our photo gallery, and we also included some night shots to show the reflective piping on the jacket. That piping didn’t show up as well as we’ve seen with other brands… not sure why since it is Scotchlite according to the tags, but it may just be our photo setup. Overall, this is a nice jacket built for hot weather and built for a modest budget. . :: Paul, 06-06-14
