Our Two Cents

Here is a closeout you will only find at MotorcycleGear.com! We bought all the remaining inventory of this jacket. Take advantage of the savings while the inventory remains! Here are our comments on this jacket: The TPG (Technical Performance Gear) Teton jacket from FirstGear is a quality street riding jacket that offers a good blend of useful features and style.

The biggest change for this year’s model is the introduction of the all new, CE approved, d3o™ Intelligent Shock Absorption™ armor. This armor is nothing like what you are used to seeing in other riding jackets. It is thin and flexible, can be positioned in the jacket for a just right fit, and has some pretty neat technology behind it for protection. I’ll go ahead and quote what FirstGear has to say about this new armor, as I think they explain it pretty well:

d3o™ Intelligent Shock Absorption™ is a patented, shock absorbing material, engineered with Intelligent Molecules that flow with you as you move, but lock together on shock to absorb the impact energy. d3o™ is rate sensitive meaning that when moved slowly, the molecules flow freely making it soft and flexible. At high speeds however – like in an impact – the molecules lock together making the material an excellent shock absorber. The whole process occurs instantly, returns to its original state as soon as the impact is over and is repeatable.

These qualities make it perfect for any application where you need total freedom of movement and excellent shock absorption. d3o™ is also extremely low profile and integrates seamlessly into garments, so neither style or function has to be compromised.

Besides this new armor technology, the Teton jacket is constructed of tough, 600 denier nylon, with Kevlar® reinforced shoulders and elbows for extra abrasion resistance where it counts, and it also includes an EVA foam back pad. So… plenty of crash protection, what about the rest? Climate control on this jacket is excellent. The Hypertex™ waterproof liner keeps water out but remains breathable. All of the secondary zippers are quality, waterproof, YKK zippers, while the two way main YKK zipper has a double storm flap with rain gutter to keep the water out. If it’s really raining hard, you can deploy the rain hood which is stored in the collar. This feature will keep water from running down your neck and into the jacket – very nice! For warmth, there is a removable insulated liner, which actually functions as a stand alone light jacket as well – a great feature for touring or whenever space is at a premium. One thing I really like about this removable liner is not only does it have a full complement of pockets, it also has two zippered torso vents. Oftentimes rides go from cold to mild to cold again (especially in the mountains). It just isn’t practical to have to stop to remove and install the liner every time the temperature changes. These vents in the liner will help extend its usable range before getting uncomfortably warm. When it is warm though, go ahead and remove the liner and open up the 6 vents in this jacket for some serious ventilation. There are two way zippers on the sleeves which reveal wrist vents, two torso vents, and two rear exit vents. The torso vents have a neat lock-cord feature which actually hold the vents open to scoop in the maximum amount of air. While this still won’t compete with a mesh jacket for airflow, I’d say it looks like it will work quite well. The main difference between the Teton and the more expensive Rainier is it has less pockets and is not as long in the torso. That is not to say it has a pocket shortage though! There are two handwarmer pockets, two chest pockets, and a key pocket on the left sleeve. All of these pockets use waterproof zippers, although they lack the storm flaps that you get on the Rainier. There are plenty of interior pockets as well. One nice touch is the jacket and the liner both have the same exact pockets in the same places, so whether the liner is in or out – your pockets are in the same place. There is reflective material used across the shoulders on the front and back, and on the upper sleeves. I encourage you to take the “View Larger Pictures” link above to take a look at all of the features this jacket has to offer.

FWIW, a customer’s comment today: “Teton means “teat” in french. Hence, the Grand Tetons are actually named “The Big Teats”. I know you guys didnt name it, but I found it funny this morning.” 06-08-12

Great jacket at a great price! I ordered a Large Tall, and I maybe could have gotten an XLT, as it does run a bit small. I can still fit a hoodie underneath it, though, but I doubt I'll ever need it. The liner is as good as advertised, as I'll ... (Read more...)
