Tourmaster Transition Series 4 Jacket (Sold Out)

As of this writing, Tour Master hasn’t published a size chart specific to this new jacket, but we checked them out with our mannequins and also with a tape and I’ve put together the chart below which should work just fine.

We tried this jacket on our Fit Check mannequins and thought they fit great. Huey is wearing a Medium and Dewey is wearing an XL (take the “View Larger Images” link above to see those pictures).

We recommend you buy the size you normally buy in men’s clothing. These jackets are also available in tall sizes. If you normally buy tall shirts (or other clothing), then these will work for you. The sleeve length and torso length of a tall is about 1 1/2” longer than the corresponding regular size.

For fit adjustment there are three-position snap adjusters on the sleeves, waist adjustment straps and hip size adjustments.

There are a lot of nice features you’ll like on this new Transition Series 4 jacket. While it isn’t VASTLY different from the prior Series 3 (which is a nice jacket), it does pack in some new features that nearly anybody will like. Here are the neat new things I see:

1) The jacket comes with a removable soft neck gaiter thingy which you can use in cold weather to keep your neck warm.

2) There is a thin stretchy hood tucked away in the collar of the jacket. Wear this hood under your helmet and this hood will keep rain water from running down your neck. The hood will direct the water to the outside of the collar where it will run off and not run in!

3). LOTS of venting… there are two large vents in the shoulder area, which have built in scoops (formed by folding under the zipper cover). And then there is a snap thingy to even prop the vent open to catch as much air as possible. There are two other front torso zip vents. And finally there are a couple zippers in back for exhaust and anti-inflation.

4) Short neck people rejoice… near the collar closure is a Velcro thing you cans stick the collar flap to if you don’t want it closed up around your neck completely. A small thing, but one I’d personally welcome.

And here is a rundown on the “expected” features:

Longer jackets like this give good coverage and they have a good deal of storage. And with longer jackets, a welcome feature is a two-way main zipper that lets you zip up from the bottom so that the jacket will not bunch up in your lap when sitting on the bike.

This jacket offers a waterproof/breathable barrier between the outer shell and the inner mesh lining to keep out rain. This design really works well, but ordinarily it takes away from the effectiveness of zippered vents because the air inflow can’t reach your skin directly. But with this jacket, they’ve used a waterproof zipper on the larger shoulder/arm vents and there is a passage from the outside all the way to the inside of the jacket when the zippers are open (called the Pipeline system). This is the best-of-both-worlds scenario in my opinion. You get the effectiveness of an integrated rain barrier, but also the good direct air flow through the vents.

And to make the front shoulder vents even better, they have a clever design that allows you to shape the vent into a “scoop” to catch even more wind (hard to describe but you’ll get the idea). The vents in the rib area are “Pipeline” too (minor nit: the zipper cover for the rib vents faces AWAY from the wind blast, so these vents won’t work quite as well as the shoulder vents). Overall, this is a pretty effective setup.

For colder weather, you zip all the vents shut and use the removable full-sleeve thermal liner. It is easy to put in and take out and they even color code the connection points to help you get it right easily. So overall, I’d recommend this jacket for cold weather all the way up to warm weather, and of course wet weather. In hot weather, it will get warm, but otherwise, you’ll like all these climate control features.

Folks who buy a jacket like this usually like plenty of storage. With this jacket you get two large cargo pockets in front, a fanny pouch and four storage pockets of different configurations on the inside (two on the jacket’s liner and two on the removable thermal liner). The inside pockets are duplicated on the jacket’s liner so you get the same storage configuration with the liner in or out… very nice.

Night reflectively is very good. We’ve taken some dark pictures for our photo gallery so you can see the reflectives. The Phoslite material used by Tour Master really lights up well.

The Transition Series 4 jacket is packed with good features and is an excellent jacket for the money. In my opinion, Tour Master excels in packing a lot of usable features into their riding gear and doing it at a very reasonable price. Paul :: 09-04-15
