REV'IT! Horizon Jacket

After examining the sizing chart from REV’IT on this jacket, we were anxious to dig into the sizing and to try some samples on our Fit Check mannequins Huey and Dewey. For “alpha sized” jackets (ones that come Small, Med, Large, etc), we generally buy a Med for Huey and an XL for Dewey (41” and 45” chest respectively). But in looking at REV’IT’s size charts, we chose a size Large and size XXL instead, and it turns out we are glad we did. These sizes look and fit great (click the “View Larger Images” link above to see).

So, after measuring and trying on, we conclude that REV’IT’s size chart is accurate. And for most people, that means you’ll have to buy one size larger jacket than you normally wear in men’s clothing. Why does REV’IT do this? Well, I dunno, but most European manufacturers struggle with the US/metric size conversion for clothing and most times, their conversions result in a smaller fit than most US-designed apparel. That’s just the way it usually works, but at least we have to give them cred for getting the chest estimates in their size chart correct, right?.

Below is the REV’IT-published chest sizes for each jacket alpha size along with our estimate of max waist/belly. We include a waist/belly measurement because if you have some belly, then you will want to make sure you are buying a jacket that is large enough to accommodate you. Those with a waist that is trimmer than the chart indicates for their chest size can use the adjustment straps to customize the fit with no problem. A jacket like this looks great with the waist adjusters in a bit.

I’ll tell you about all the specific features of the Horizon jacket by REV’IT!, but overall, I’d like to say that REV’IT! makes a very high quality jacket. The feel of the materials, the stitching detail, the well tailored seams… all those things give you an overall feel of fine materials and top notch assembly work. It is really something that is hard to convey via words and pictures, but in person, you’ll certainly see it. The best analogy I can make is when comparing cars… REV’IT! is analogous to the expensive German car. More money for sure, but there IS a difference! So about this jacket specifically… this is a classic 3/4 style (meaning longer at the waist than a sport jacket) which is very popular with those who ride every day or take long trips. The longer length will give you more coverage to protect from the wind, rain and cold. And the longer design allows for more pockets which are also important for long distance/frequent riding. This jacket takes a bit different approach to keep you dry and to keep you cool. Many jackets like this have a similar looking fabric outer shell, and then they have a waterproof “mid-liner” which is a waterproof and breathable liner that sits behind the outer shell and the inner mesh lining. But this jacket uses outer shell fabrics (one that is more robust in impact areas and another that is lighter weight for the torso) that have the waterproof liner bonded directly to the back side of the shell material. What’s the difference you say? Well, for one, the outer shell effectively becomes waterproofed, which means your jacket doesn’t become water logged and the outer pockets can be considered waterproof. Big difference! Now granted, this may only come into play with the most severely wet conditions, but if you ride all day in the rain, you’ll see what I mean. Anyway, then there is ventilation. The vents on this jacket are on the chest behind two triangular covers. When the covers are down and secured by their waterproof zipper, the water and air flow are blocked, but when open, then allow air to enter through the perforations in the molded panel. We have some good shots of this in our photo gallery (click the “View Larger Images” link above). And behind those vents is some spongy sort of liner material very much like you have in boots or a helmet. The material is a bit thick and completely flow through, so it creates a path for air to flow into the jacket even when the wind is pressing the jacket against your chest. It is sort of like a built in ducting mechanism. Overall, I’d give the venting an A+ for design, and maybe a B for overall venting ability (since there are only two vents total). For that reason, you will like this jacket very much in cold to warm weather, but probably not hot weather (get a mesh jacket for that!). Speaking of cold weather, there is a very nice full-sleeve removable liner which should do a good job. It is made of higher quality materials than with most, and will probably do just as good a job as thicker liners. It is nice to have a jacket with a higher quality/thinner liner because the use or non-use of the liner won’t play havoc with the fit or size selection. The jacket has either a full circumference zipper or short rear zipper to attach to REV’IT! pants. Overall, if you appreciate products that use the highest quality materials and construction, and you don’t mind paying for them, here’s your jacket!
