Sizing Information

We tried the size Medium in this jacket on Huey and we put an XL jacket on Dewey. These are the sizes they normally wear and both fit great. My advice would be to wear the size you normally wear in men’s clothing.

If you look at Icon’s chest size estimates for each jacket, you might be choosing a size larger than you normally wear (example a person with a 46 chest typically is an XL, but using Icon’s chart you’d buy a XXL). Icon’s styling has always been sort of loose as compared to other brands’ sport style jackets. This probably explains why the size chart understates the chest size range for any given alpha jacket size.

My personal advice for a good fit that is snug enough not to flap or inflate while riding would be to buy the size you normally wear in men’s clothing. We’ve added a column to the table below to give you our estimate of max chest and belly size for each jacket size. If you prefer a loose fit, then Icon’s estimates would be appropriate.

Contrary to Icon’s marketing info which says this jacket has an “Icon Sport Fit”, I find the taper from chest to waist to be pretty “relaxed” and therefore belly size won’t be a problem for most. But if you have a bit of a belly, you’ll want to get a measurement and make sure to choose a jacket large enough to work.

Size Icon’s Chest Est Our Max Chest Our Max Belly
Small 36-38 38-40 36
Medium 38-40 40-42 38
Large 40-42 42-44 40
XL 42-44 44-46 42
XXL 46-48 46-48 44
XXXL 48-50 48-50 46
XXXXL 52-54 52-54 50

Our Two Cents

The Icon Compound Mesh jacket will work for those who mainly ride in mild to warm weather and want protection beyond what a lighter-duty full mesh jacket can offer. The shell of this jacket is a combination of leather and mesh material. Leather is used in the elbow and shoulder areas because leather offers the best abrasion protection for motorcycling. The remainder of the jacket is mesh with some nifty molded rubber embellishments. The mesh areas will allow the air to blow through this jacket freely to keep you comfortable in warm to hot weather riding. An all-leather jacket with this many added features would be HEAVY and HOT, but even with the molded rubber extras, this one is about average in overall weight. One of the main “extras” on this jacket is the elaborate upper back protector. The center part is hard plastic and would have some protective effect. It also looks great. I like the two front zippered storage pockets. They have LONG zippers that would be usable even with gloves on. If you do most of your riding in mild to cold weather, then have a look at the Compound Jacket (a leather/textile combo jacket). Overall, I like this jacket. It is rare to find an almost full-mesh design with this level of protection. Paul :: 03-27-12

As for other “feature photos”, please refer to the photo spread we developed for the leather/tex version of this jacket, the Compound Jacket, by taking the link at the bottom of this page. The features of this jacket are the same as with the leather/tex version except the textile shell materials are mesh instead of solid textile and this jacket DOES NOT come with a removable thermal liner.

I bought both jackets to see how they both stack up since they are both currently in the $200 range(The Icon jacket is on closeout). My build is 6", 130lbs, and 30 waist. The Compund jacket is the perfect length with the drop-tail, more protective... (Read more...)
