Our Two Cents

FirstGear’s Excursion gloves are very close in design to the TPG Cold Riding gloves because they are built for a special circumstance. The gloves are insulated on the back of the hand, but not in the palm area, a design which is aimed at riders who have heated grips. The absence of insulation in the palm will give you greater feel for the controls and will also allow your hands to absorb the heat from the grips quicker than a glove that places insulation between your hand and the glove. These Excursion gloves are “lightly insulated” where the TPG Cold Riding Gloves have a full helping of insulation (twice the thickness in fact). So these Excursion gloves could be used in milder climates. The shell of the glove is all leather. The back side of the hand includes a couple strips of Aramid material over the knuckles. This Aramid is backed by thin pieces of shock absorbing D3O® material for some added impact protection. These gloves have a generous gauntlet that will easily slip over jacket sleeves and there is a bungee type cord you can use to cinch them down to seal out rain and wind. On the outside heel of the hand, there is another patch of the Aramid/D3O material since this part of the hand is instinctively the first to hit the pavement in case of a spill. Another feature you’ll like is the little rubber wiper thingy on the left thumb which you can use to squeegee down your helmet shield. The insides are lined with a plush material that feels good. These gloves also have a generous amount of reflective material for nighttime visibility (take the “View Larger Images” link above to see that). So if your bike has heated grips, then consider this glove for mild winter riding and occasionally wet weather. :: Paul, 03-05-13
