  • d3o™ intelligent shock absorption in the shoulders and elbows provides superior protection
  • HYPERTEX™ PLUS waterproof and breathable outer shell material keeps rain outside, but allows inside humidity to escape
  • Outer shell material is 100% 600 denier nylon for abrasion resistance
  • Kevlar® reinforced Teramid® underlay at the crucial first point of contact on the shoulders and elbows to keep your skin safe from the road
  • Two 8” chest vents with cord locks to securely hold them open for airflow, two 9” sleeve cuff vents with 2-way zippers to regulate volume and two 9” rear exhaust vents
  • YKK® and RiRi® waterproof zippers protect all exterior vents and pockets from moisture
  • 10 exterior pockets! Four front cargo, two chest, two front side. Left side contains a port for heated apparel power cord or headphones for your favorite listening device and both pockets contain cord pulls to create a wind block around the bottom of the jacket (to release the bungee, unzip the jacket from the bottom up to find the cord locks just inside), key pocket on the left sleeve plus a large rear storage with a 13” opening
  • All pockets designed to deflect moisture
  • Integrated in the collar is an under-the-helmet rain hood– never again will water run down your neck!
  • Reflective panels on the front, side, arm and back keep you visible at night
  • Adjustable waist and arm straps provide a custom fit
  • Drop-tail design ensures the jacket will not ride up in the sitting position
  • The main front, 2-way YKK® zipper is shielded from moisture by a double storm flap with rain gutter, held in place by spring-snap closures; inside the storm flap on the left side is a security pocket with a red slider for visibility–easy access to storage without having to unzip the jacket
  • When not in use, hang your gloves on the d-ring located below the lower right pocket
  • If you prefer to use an active safety device, there is a loop at the center back of the jacket for an L.E.D. accessory light (sold separately)
  • To block wind and retain warmth, sleeve cuffs and fleece-lined collar are tipped with neoprene
  • Jacket-to-pant 10” full conjunction zipper fits easily through zipped liner portal and can be sewn onto your favorite pair of riding pants
  • Standalone jacket included as a zip-in liner; fabric is a 3-layer laminate that is water and windproof and micro fleece lined to retain warmth
  • For airflow, there are two chest vents that line up with the chest vents on the outer jacket
  • A Firstgear standard; inside every jacket there is a phone pocket on the left side and a map/cargo pocket on the right side; the TPG Rainier has these pockets in both the liner and the jacket and so, whether the liner is in or out, the internal pockets are in the same place

Sizing Information

These jackets are sold in “alpha” sizes. FirstGear offers sizing information for this product which is very typical for any brand jacket as follows:
Size S M L XL 2XL 3XL 4XL
Max Chest 34-36 38-40 42-44 46-48 50-52 54-56 58-60
Max Waist 28-30 32-34 36-38 40-42 44-46 48-50 52-54

Tall sizes: FirstGear offers this jacket in talls, which provides a rarely found option for tall people. The body and sleeves of the jackets are 1 1/2 to 2 inches taller than the “standard” cut jackets. If you normally have to buy “talls” then these should work for you.

You can also consult sizing information from FirstGear to choose a size based upon your height and weight.

We found these charts to be accurate for the Rainier jacket so pick the size that corresponds to your measurements. If you fall right between two sizes you might try the smaller of the two. If anything, these run just ever so slightly big.

Our Two Cents

You’ll find this deal only at MotorcycleGear.com! We bought all the remaining US inventory in this style/color and we are selling them at a great price. Here are our previous product comments: The TPG (Technical Performance Gear) Rainier jacket from FirstGear is a quality “adventure” style 3/4 length jacket that is ready for any ride you can think up. This is FirstGear’s top of the line textile jacket and there are several things that set it apart from the rest.

The biggest change for this year’s model is the introduction of the all new, CE approved, d3o™ Intelligent Shock Absorption™ armor. This armor is nothing like what you are used to seeing in other riding jackets. It is thin and flexible, can be positioned in the jacket for a just right fit, and has some pretty neat technology behind it for protection. I’ll go ahead and quote what FirstGear has to say about this new armor, as I think they explain it pretty well:

d3o™ Intelligent Shock Absorption™ is a patented, shock absorbing material, engineered with Intelligent Molecules that flow with you as you move, but lock together on shock to absorb the impact energy. d3o™ is rate sensitive meaning that when moved slowly, the molecules flow freely making it soft and flexible. At high speeds however – like in an impact – the molecules lock together making the material an excellent shock absorber. The whole process occurs instantly, returns to its original state as soon as the impact is over and is repeatable.

These qualities make it perfect for any application where you need total freedom of movement and excellent shock absorption. d3o™ is also extremely low profile and integrates seamlessly into garments, so neither style or function has to be compromised.

Besides this new armor technology, the Rainier jacket is constructed of tough, 600 denier nylon, with Kevlar® reinforced shoulders and elbows for extra abrasion resistance where it counts, and it also includes an EVA foam back pad. So… plenty of crash protection, what about the rest? Climate control on this jacket is excellent. The Hypertex™ waterproof liner keeps water out but remains breathable. All of the secondary zippers are quality, waterproof, YKK zippers, while the main YKK zipper has a double storm flap with rain gutter to keep the water out. If it’s really raining hard, you can deploy the rain hood which is stored in the collar. This feature will keep water from running down your neck and into the jacket – very nice! For warmth, there is a removable insulated liner, which actually functions as a stand alone light jacket as well – a great feature for touring or whenever space is at a premium. One thing I really like about this removable liner is not only does it have a full complement of pockets, it also has two zippered torso vents. Oftentimes rides go from cold to mild to cold again (especially in the mountains). It just isn’t practical to have to stop to remove and install the liner every time the temperature changes. These vents in the liner will help extend its usable range before getting uncomfortably warm. When it is warm though, go ahead and remove the liner and open up the 6 vents in this jacket for some serious ventilation. There are two way zippers on the sleeves which reveal wrist vents, two torso vents, and two rear exit vents. The torso vents have a neat lock-cord feature which actually hold the vents open to scoop in the maximum amount of air. While this still won’t compete with a mesh jacket for airflow, I’d say it looks like it will work quite well. Everybody knows they pack way too much stuff on their motorcycle trips – with this jacket, I think you could actually carry it all. There are no less than 10 pockets on the exterior of this jacket alone! All of these pockets use waterproof zippers, and the four cargo pockets on the front have a storm flap for an extra level of moisture protection. There is also a very large pocket on the rear of the jacket, perfect for bulky items (like an extra layer of clothing). There are plenty of interior pockets as well. One nice touch is the jacket and the liner both have the same exact pockets in the same places, so whether the liner is in or out – your pockets are in the same place. There is reflective material used across the shoulders on the front and back, and down the sides of the sleeves. This jacket is extremely versatile and will serve you well, be it on your commute to work, or your 3,000 mile trek to Alaska (and beyond?). I encourage you to take the “View Larger Pictures” link above to take a look at all of the features this jacket has to offer.

This jacket has been pretty awesome so far. The D3o armor is a little questionable when it comes to protection and does have some difficulty staying in place. In my experience every time I put the jacket on then shoulder pads need to be adjusted to fit over my shoulders. (Read more...)
