Sizing Information

The pants are sold in ordinary US Alpha sizes and Alpinestars offers a chart to estimate the waist size for each alpha size. The conversion estimates are about what you’d expect for each US alpha size but the actual pants are a bit smaller than what Alpinestars estimates. In our Fit Check with Hewey and Dewey, we had to do our feature photos with the XL pants on Hewey (who would usually wear a Medium) because the Medium pants wouldn’t fit over his bum!

To help you get the right size, we’ve developed a chart which shows Alpinestars “official” estimate of size and what size we observed. Please note that we are listing a waist size range for each pant. That is because the pants have adjustment tabs on the waist that allow you to snug them down if needed.

These pants have long side zippers and are intended to be worn over jeans or other street clothes, but they could also be worn over shorts or underwear. We are listing a “Max waist” which shows the actual waist sizes of the pant. If you plan to wear the jeans OVER average to bulky street clothes, I’d advise you to take a measurement of yourself OVER those clothes at the waist band. Typically, we find that most folks will buy one full size larger for use as an overpant as compared to what they would buy if they were using them over underwear or other light clothes.

Our Two Cents

Okay, now that I’ve calmed myself after having to ONCE AGAIN spend an hour quantifying Alpinestar’s goofy sizing situation, let’s move on to the merits of the pants! Actually I really like these Oxygen Air pants! Unlike many other overpants we sell, these pants are cut more “normally” than many. FirstGear’s overpants come to mind and are kind of long through the rise by comparison. When worn as overpants, they start to feel a bit like Urkel pants. The longer rise is great for long distance riding though because the pants stay up well when sitting and don’t gap in the back. Anyway, for just every day use, these pants seem a lot more trim and sporty and look good too. I tried them on over cargo shorts and they fit good in the size recommended by my chart. If I were wearing them over jeans (in true overpant mode), I’d buy one size bigger. The mesh in the crotch and thigh area should flow a lot of air. These won’t be quite as breezy as a full mesh pant, but they won’t be far off, and with some solid textile construction, they’ll be suitable to wear in cooler weather as well. The knees have removable armor of a molded rubber design and there is some thin foam padding in the hip area. The pants are cut with a bit of a pre-curve at the knee and there is some expansion material above the knees, so everything flexes well without any bunching or pinching. The pants have some reflective piping so you will have some visibility at night. Take the “View Larger Images” link above and take a look at the “night” photos included to see how that looks. We’ve got pics of the two or three other major features shown there too. Overall, I like these pants and I bet you will too. :: Paul, 3-25-12
