Our Two Cents

If you’ve ever seen the film On Any Sunday, or if you were a race fan in the 60’s, 70’s, or 80’s, then you probably know who this jacket is named after. Mert Lawwill had a very successful racing career that spanned from the early 60’s to the late 70’s, and included 17 national championship wins. He later went on to run several race teams with riders such as Wayne Rainey and Kenny Roberts. Nice to see Alpinestars paying tribute to one of racing’s icons. Anyway, about the jacket: The Mert jacket is definitely a throwback to the good old days with its retro styling, but it has some modern protective features that will keep you safe out on the road. There is CE approved armor in the shoulders and elbows, and PE foam armor for the chest and back. The leather used is 1.1mm full-grain and is very soft and supple right out of the package. It’s not quite as thick as a race jacket, but it’s definitely thick enough to get the job done. The majority of the jacket is fully perforated, with solid leather in the shoulders and outer sleeves for extra abrasion resistance. For this reason the Mert jacket is definitely better suited to warm temperatures, although a quilted vest type liner is included for cooler weather. The Mert jacket has some very nice stitched Alpinestars logos as well as an embroidered patch on the chest.
