Sizing Information

The overall fit/size of this new style seems “true” to their published size chart (see below), so if you are comfortable with a certain size from previous boots, then choose the same size. I’d consider the width of the men’s sizes to be normal to slightly wide (D or E).

The inner laces on this boot allow for very welcome adjustability of the fit of this style through the instep of the boot. I like it!

Our Two Cents

I’m comparing the features of this new 2013 boot to the previous 2011 version and most of the features are very similar. I honestly don’t remember my exact impressions of the 2011 boot but somehow, I’m really liking this new 2013 boot. The big thing for me is fit. The inside is lined with a breathable liner with just a slight bit of padding behind it. And then there is the internal lacing arrangement that lets me snug up the instep area of the boot. And then lastly there is an easy-to-use ratchet mechanism that allows a pretty wide range of adjustment of the size of the top diameter of the boot. This is to allow for varying calf thicknesses and whether or not you are wearing the boots over tucked-in sport pants. You’d think with all the bells and whistles, they’d be a pain to put on and take off, but quite the opposite. The speed laces work very well and quickly as does the top ratchet. In older AS designs like this I always objected to the fuss involved with putting them on, but not so on these! Oh and one more feature that is new is that the side zipper on the boot is attached to a narrow panel of stretch material which helps when pulling up the zipper. It makes the boot snug, but a bit flexible so you don’t have to sort of tease the zipper sides together with your hands as you try to zip them up (as you sometimes do with rigidly affixed zippers).

The boots of course have full-on racing features, but are comfortable and functional so they could be used for sport/street riding as well. There is a substantial amount of protection on either side of the ankle and heel and also in the shin area. The “Multi Link” control is a series of external plastic pieces that slide and pivot to allow movement in some directions (for shifting, walking, etc), but restrict movement in unfavorable directions (those that cause injury). Most race boots today have similar systems. I really like the rounded shape of the heel assembly. The idea of a design like this is to promote a sliding motion during a fall. Boots that have a more traditional heel shape are more likely to hang up on something (on the ground) while sliding along and wrench the ankle. Makes perfect sense to me.

You’ll notice in the drop down menu that there are vented and non-vented choices. The vented boots use perforated upper materials to allow for more air flow through the boot. Those in warmer climates will like that! We’ve taken some good close-up pictures so take a look by clicking the “View Larger Images” link above. Overall I really like this new premium race boot from Alpinestars. It is nice to have a pleasant surprise when reviewing new products! :: Paul, 06-05-13

The alpinestar boots fit really well. I wear a 9.5 US shoe size and 43 on Sidis (supposedly 9.5), but on alpinestars i'm apparently a 44 (also supposedly 9.5). I think the padding on the alpinestars interior is thicker, specially with the inner ... (Read more...)
