Sizing Information

The overall fit/size of this new style seems “true” to their published size chart (see below), so if you are comfortable with a certain size from previous boots, then choose the same size. I’d consider the width of the men’s sizes to be normal to slightly wide (D or E).

Our Two Cents

The Gunner WP boots by Alpinestars appear to me to be identical in looks and construction as the New Land boot that I reviewed last year with one major difference…. the waterproofing membrane used in the Gunner WP is Alpinestars’ “house brand” waterproof/breathable material called Drystar (rather than the Gore-Tex used in the New Land). As I mentioned in the New Land review, Gore-Tex comes at a premium, and with the Gunner/New Land situation, there is no exception (see the link below for current pricing on the New Land). Worth it? I don’t know and you won’t either unless you buy two pair and wear one on each foot and contemplate the dryness of each foot in the same rainstorm. If you decide that experiment is worth it, please buy both pair from me! ha. Anyway, let me borrow a few remarks about the boot itself from the New Land review: Many riders like a shorter boot like this because of the ease in getting them on and off and the increased comfort for wearing off the bike. These boots are cut low in back so that you have a lot of freedom when walking, but the front of the ankle and a bit up the shin bone are covered. The boots are made waterproof with the integrated Drystar liner (already discussed). If you take the “View Larger Images” link above you’ll see some shots of the height of the boot. Please note that the interior gaiter across the opening of the boot only covers up to right about to the top of the foot, so if you have rain gear to shed water from there down, you’ll be OK to keep water out, but don’t step in any deep (or even not-so-deep) puddles or you’ll be swamped, but I guess that is one of the trade-offs of a shorter height boot like this. Anyway, the overall looks of this boot are very nice. It is a blend of sport and touring that should appeal to just about anybody. The molded soles have enough stiffness to hold up when bearing down on pegs, but give enough to make them usable off the bike. The wide band that goes around the shin bone is heavily padded for protection. The heel and toe areas are reinforced and there is a hard rubber panel over where your shifter will be contacting the boot. Overall, a very nice style with quality construction and a waterproof breathable liner. :: Paul, 02-24-14

PS: Alpinestar’s description mentions protectors on each side of the ankle. The sides of the boot are heavy duty for sure, but…. I see a rubber vent-looking piece on the outside, but I’d hardly call it a “protector” and I’m having a hard time feeling anything under the leather on the inside of the ankle. There probably is, but I can’t feel it and I thought I’d mention it in case you get a pair and can’t feel it either… you aren’t alone!

Took this picture to show the height difference with the Gunner WP and my older full height Alpinestar boots with over 80,000 miles on them. The Gunners are very comfortable with more overall padding around the ankles (no plates are installed) and the low height makes them markedly cooler. No breaking in required and they are waterproof as evidenced during a recent cross country tour. (Read more...)
