Sizing Information

We find that TCX boots are generally an easy fit and they are consistent from one model to the next. And we have very good luck using their size chart to convert from US sizes to their Euro size. Go here to view the TCX Sizing Conversion Chart page for help in choosing a size.

We estimate the width to be about “D” or medium. These are slightly wider than Sidi boots and fit much like Alpinestars.

Our Two Cents

I’ve taken a novel approach to reviewing two new TCX boots today… the X-Five Waterproof Boots and the X-Five Evo Gore-Tex Boots. Both pair came into the shop at the same time and of course they have similar looks and function, so I thought you might be interested in a “comparison” review to help choose.

But first, a bit of background… many years ago, TCX boots were sold in the US under the Oxtar brand, and the “original” X-Five was called the Matrix, and that boot really set up a reputation as being one of the best touring boots sold. Unfortunately, the company who makes this product line had to rebrand about five years back and re-entered the US market as TCX, so most people really don’t connect the two product lines, but I tell the story just to let you know what a longstanding reputation this brand really has. And in my opinion, it is very well deserved. The brand is fantastic and offers the best quality/price package of any brand we carry (big statement I know, but I really believe that). Anyway, back to THESE boots…

I put one X-Five waterproof on one foot and the Gore-Tex boot on the other and wore them around the shop for a while, and if I had a blindfold on, I couldn’t tell you which was which. The upper on both boots are full grain leather, which I think you will appreciate as they break in. Most touring boots these days are of man-made material and I know they have virtues, but they just don’t break in like real leather IMHO.

The BIG difference in the two boots though is the use of Gore-Tex vs the “generic” waterproof barrier. Of all the waterproof boots we carry these days, I’d say about 15% use Gore-Tex and the others use their own version of “generic” barrier. And if there ever was a comparison that illustrates the price differential… mostly apples to apples of a non-GT vs the GT boot, this is it… about fifty bucks retail. And over the years, the sale of Gore-Tex boots continues, and that is because people find value in the functionality. No other material has the same reputation for the remarkable quality of being able to keep water out while allowing moisture to escape than the real Gore-Tex. Of course not everybody would agree and not everybody has the extra fifty bucks to spend so Gore-Tex remains solidly established, but by no means a dominant factor. My advice? If you’ve got the bucks, then get it, but you’ll probably be happy with the boots either way because you, as an individual, will have no basis for comparison.

Take a look at the photos of each model to see the subtle differences. It’s sort of a “Where’s Waldo” exercise, so I’ll point out the main differences… the GT version has a flex panel and reflective patch in back of the ankle and the WP does not. The flap over the main zipper on the GT covers the whole zipper and on the WP it is just the top 1/3 or so. The other technical/fit difference on the GT is that its main zipper is connected to the boot with a narrow strip of flex material so that it might better “hug” your foot in the ankle and calf area. Could I tell a difference? Not really. From my experience, this feature allows the boot maker to cut the boot just a touch tighter in the ankle/calf and then rely on the flex zone to release just the right amount to give people a “custom” fit. I’ve seen the virtues of this in certain Alpinestars boots… especially those with a lot of plastic armor and such, but on this boot, I really didn’t feel much difference.

Like any good street/touring boot, these have protection in all the usual places…. either side of the ankle bone, shin and over the toe (where the shifter hits). They also have stiffened toe boxes and heel counters. You’ll also feel that the sole has some sort of internal stiffener in the arch to withstand your weight when you bear down on the pegs. Overall, two great boots, and ones I’m sure you’d be happy to own. :: Paul, 03-20-15

Received my TCX X-Five EVO GTX boots tonight. I ordered these because reviews advised they would fit my wide feet, they do! I also have big ankles, a high instep and muscular calves. (Read more...)
