Our Two Cents

Sidi has done a short race boot like this for years, and this new Speedride boot is the latest version (previous version is the Streetburner boot). We sell lots of hiker-height boots but this one is unique in that it keeps all the features of a full on race boot, but just with a shorter top.

The Speedride closes via the two cable-ratchet units on the side of the boot. These give the advantage of infinite adjustability of the instep fit with the safety of a low profile design which won’t interfere with your bike’s mechanism (like laces are prone to do). This same closure is used on Sidi’s “latest and greatest” race boot, the Mag-1. Sidi’s had a version of these for a long time, but this version features little magnets in the red keeper at the end of the cable loop which holds the cable in place while you use the crank to tighten it up. Without the magnets it’s a two handed close, but the little magnets make the job a lot easier.

The boots have LOTS of protection around the heel area. The armor system is both a slider and a shock absorber, and the parts are replaceable in case you get to test them out. The heel is undercut all the way around (reminds me of cowboy boots) so that the edges of the heel aren’t likely to catch on the pavement like they would if they were normally shaped and sized. And the heel sticks out a bit with all the shock absorbing material, so if you slam the back side of your foot on the pavement, you’ll get a lot of help.

The boots include toe sliders and the anchor for the toe slider incorporates a little plastic slider which is a vent. Looks like something you’d see on a helmet! With the positioning, I bet the air flow is pretty remarkable. I took a photo of the air passages.. they are large and straight through to your toes.

Other protection includes impact pads incorporated into the upper material on either side of the ankle bone. But they are comfortable with the boot on… I can’t even tell they are there. And finally, the toe box area of the boot is heavily reinforced and there is a very stiff plastic part over the toe where the shifter will hit.

With all this armor, the comfort level of the boot isn’t going to be the same as with standard sport street boots. I’m not saying they’re uncomfortable, but they won’t break in to be a super comfortable style for walking.

Overall, this is a very sturdy boot with several race-quality protection features. So if that look and those features are what you want, but in a short boot, this is the one for you! :: Paul, 01-22-16
